KC Corkery defeated Alex Slovic of the University of Washington 6-4, 6-4 today to win the ITA Region 8 Tournament in Santa Clara. Corkery's victory earns him a bid to compete in the National Indoor Championships, November 3-6 in Columbus, Ohio, where last year he won the consolation bracket in the single elimination tournament.
Corkery, ranked ninth in the nation in the ITA Preseason rankings and seeded first in the Region 8 Tournament, won for the sixth time in the last five days. Slovic, ranked 23rd in the preseason poll and the second seed in the tournament, advanced to today's final after beating Stanford's James Pade in yesterday in the semifinals.
After earning a first round bye, Corkery rolled through the 128-man tournament, never losing a set. He beat Matt Baca of Cal Poly, Kenzo Hirakawa-Won of Santa Clara, Thomas Bieri of Oregon, Lennart Maack of Cal and John Nguyen of Cal Poly before facing Slovic in the finals.
