Between The Bars
Oct. 26, 2005
We are excited to announce that Maranda Smith will be joining our team for this season. She will report after our holiday break, on Dec. 27th. Maranda brings big-time powerful gymnastics, an awesome personality, and enthusiasm for her academic goals. She is planning on studying to become an orthopaedic surgeon.
It's nice to finally be able to announce: 'Our freshman class is now complete.' Even though our freshman class is large (7 of our 13 competitors are freshmen), they compliment each other so well that it doesn't seem like a large class. That is, until last Saturday when I sat behind them at the football game and looked down the line of freshman, after freshman, after freshman ... and on and on. I think one of the reasons why this class isn't overwhelming is because of the overall chemistry of our entire team. They've got the team synergy thing going this year at a level that we haven't had for a while.
News on the Bruin front: Workouts are going well. I've choreographed 4 of our 13 floor routines. It seems a bit daunting at the moment, but then it always does this time of year ... Somehow, some way I'll get them done. Chris and Marshall are the task masters on form, technique, and positions. Our team has a great overall work ethic and seems to find a way to make each day fun and new. More good news: Kate is now crutch- and brace-free. She's almost able to walk evenly. She is still a long way away from being able to flip and twist, but she's making good progress.
Academically, it's fall quarter midterm exam time! This is always an 'exciting' time of year, especially for the freshmen (They'd probably suggest I use a different word than 'exciting').
