Cougars Lose in Four Games at ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State's volleyball team stopped an eight-match losing streak with a 3-1 win over Washington State Thursday night at the Wells Fargo Arena.
The Sun Devils (7-13 overall, 2-8 Pac-10) won the match 32-30, 30-12, 25-30, 30-26. WSU is now 8-15 overall, 1-9 in league contests.
ASU's Nina Reeves led all players with 22 kills, hit .442 and added 18 digs. Giovana Melo had 66 assists. Nicole Morton added 17 kills, 14 digs and three service aces. Sydney Donahue had 23 digs. The Sun Devils hit .268 for the match.
Natalia Owens led the Cougars with 21 kills and had 12 digs. Te'Ara Epps had a match-high seven blocks. Cougar freshman Jalen Pendon broke her own school record with 35 digs in the match and had a pair of aces. Maureen Perez had 47 assists. WSU hit .217 for the match and out-blocked ASU 12.5 to 4.
WSU had a five-point lead in the first game at 19-14 but could not hold on as the Sun Devils charged back to tie the game at 24. The Cougs and ASU tied at each point until Nina Reeves had her ninth kill of this first-game for 31 points and Morton and Meek combined on a block for the final 32nd point. Owens had 12 kills with three errors in 24 attacks for a .375 in this 30-32 WSU loss.
Using the momentum from the first game win, Arizona State roared out to take game two 30-12. ASU hit .444 and held WSU to a .059 hitting percentage in this game.
The Cougars had the early lead in the third game before ASU scored four straight points to tie the game at 19. The squads traded scores until WSU moved past a 25-all tie to score the final five points of the game and take a 30-25 win. Cougars hit .289 in this game and held ASU to .167.
WSU battled hard in the fourth game but could not catch ASU on the way to a 30-26 win.
Washington State travels to No. 9 Arizona for a Friday night match at Tucson.
