Huskies Come Out Firing at the San Diego Torero Challenge

Washington Men's tennis team came ready to play at San Diego Torero Challenge winning four out of their six singles matches against the tournament's host, the University of San Diego. The Torero Challenge is a round-robin style tournament without team scoring, only individual results.

Washington's Daniel Chu represented the Huskies in the first flight of the Torero Challenge losing a tight match to Mirza Koristovic of San Diego 7-6, 6-3. Mike Ricks also suffered a close defeat in the Flight IV division losing to his opponent, Thomas Liversage, 7-5, 6-1.

Four underclassmen took home victories at the Torero Challenge showing promising signs for the future of Husky tennis.

In Flight II Singles Andy Kuharszky grinded out the first set with Oscar Plotnik of San Diego, eventually prevailing 7-5. Kuharszky was able to pick up speed in the second set and quickly close out the match winning 6-0. Freshman Klaus Jank won a long three set match in the Flight III division defeating Jonas Mouly of San Diego, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Newcomer Andy Gerst had a come from behind victory over Matt Ozurovich. After losing the first set, Gerst fought back to win the next two defeating his opponent 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. David Chu had the shortest match of the day in the Flight VI division. Chu defeated fellow freshman Sammy Atri 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles action, the Huskies were victorious in one of the three matches played. In Flight I doubles Jank and Kuharszky lost 8-4 to the top San Diego team of Koristovic and Liversage. Gerst and Ricks lost a brutally close match to Mouly and Plotnik 9-8. The Chu brothers pulled out the sole doubles win for the Huskies, beating Ozurovich and Prajoga 8-2.

The Huskies will be back in action tomorrow at 1pm facing off with San Diego State. The tournament will conclude on Monday, when Washington meets up with Pac-10 rival USC for the first time since the Huskies ousted the Trojans from the NCAA Team Tournament in the spring of last season.
