Cardinal Wrestlers Compete in Open Tournaments
Nov. 3, 2005
Stanford, Calif. - After kicking off the season on Tuesday with the intrasquad wrestle-offs, Stanford will be heading out on the road to a pair of open tournaments before officially beginning the season against No. 14 Missouri next Friday.
Josh Zupancic (149 pounds), Ray Blake (165 pounds), Imad Kharbush (174 pounds), Ryan Hagen (184 pounds) and Ian Bork (197 pounds) will travel to the Eastern Michigan Open in Ypsilanti. Weigh-ins are at 8:30 a.m., followed by the all-day competition at the Bowen Field House.
'The Eastern Michigan trip serves two purposes,' noted head coach Kerry McCoy. 'It will be good competition in a preseason tournament and for Imad, who's from Michigan, Josh, who's from Ohio, and Ray, who's from Chicago, it will be a nice opportunity for them to travel and for their families to see them compete.'
The rest of the team will be travling only a few miles north on El Camino Real to the Menlo College Open in Atherton. Weigh-ins are at 9 a.m., followed by the all-day competition at the Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
'The Menlo Open will be good for our team because they will get competition against different opponents,' added McCoy. 'They won't have to worry about travel, so it will almost be like competing at home.'
Next Friday, Nov. 11, the Cardinal will be in Kansas City for its first dual of the season against 14th-ranked Missouri. Two days later, on Sunday, Nov. 13, Stanford will compete in the Central Missouri Open in Warrensburg.
