Sun Devil Soccer Places Five on Academic All-District VIII Teams
Nov. 3, 2005
TEMPE, Ariz. - Five members of the Arizona State University soccer team were selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII Team it was announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Sun Devils placed two members on the first and second teams and one on the third team. Those student-athletes earning first team honors are now eligible for Academic All-America accolades that will be announced later in November.
The five honorees for the Sun Devils included first team selections Manya Makoski (Sr., Trumbull, Conn.) and Elizabeth Bogus (Sr., Sandy, Utah), second team members Brittany Cooper (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) and Kyleyn Felts (So., Irvine, Calif.) and third team selection Kim Bingham (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.). The five selections is a program record, bettering the three awards earned last year when Holly Azevedo (first team) joined second team selections Bogus and Makoski. All told, the Sun Devils now have earned 11 academic honors from CoSIDA since 2001.
Makoski and Bogus, who earned second team honors last year, join Amy LePeilbet as the only Sun Devils to earn multiple CoSIDA academic honors after LePeilbet was a first-team selection in both 2002 and 2003. The duo, which also were selected to various Academic All-Pac-10 honors over the past two seasons, are now candidates for Academic All-America accolades and will look to join LePeilbet (first team in 2003 and third team in 2002) and Azevedo (first team in 2004) as the lone CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in program history. Makoski will be looking for the second national academic award of her career after being selected to the NSCAA second team last season.
Cooper, Felts and Bingham are making their first appearances on the CoSIDA lists with Felts' honor being the first academic accolade of her career as candidates have to have been enrolled with a school for one year. Cooper adds her third honor after being chosen for the Academic All-Pac-10 honorable mention team each of the past two seasons while Bingham collects her second following a first-team selection in the conference last year.
The Sun Devils hit the road for the final weekend of the regular season as they face USC at 2 p.m. Friday before closing out the trip at No. 4 UCLA at 1 p.m. Sunday.
