Tyson Wahl and Pieter Berger Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Men's Soccer Team

BERKELEY - California seniors Tyson Wahl and Pieter Berger have been named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District VIII men's soccer team. Wahl and Berger were nominated based on their academic achievement and athletic skills.
In order to be considered for the Academic All-District team, the athlete must have at least a 3.2 grade point average, be a starter or a significant contributor and be at least in their second year at the institution. Both athletes are now eligible for Academic All-America honors.
Wahl, a native of Newport Beach, Calif., has earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors twice this season and has twice been picked to the Soccer America Team of the Week. Wahl is currently second on the team in goals (5) and game-winning goals (2). The senior defender recorded two goals in Cal's 4-0 victory over Oregon State Sept. 23. In 2004, he was named to the All-Pac-10 second team as well as the Pac-10 All-Academic second team. Wahl will be graduating in December with a degree in sociology.
Berger, a forward/ midfielder from Irvine, Calif., scored the game-winning goal against Stanford Oct. 8, to snap Cal's two game losing streak and record Cal's first Pac-10 win of the season. Berger has started every game for the Bears this season while recording four goals and two assists. In 2004, Berger was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII men's soccer team and was awarded first team Pac-10 All-Academic honors for the second year in a row. He will be graduating in the spring of 2006 with a degree in American studies.
