Nov. 4, 2005
SEATTLE - Washington State (11-7-2, 4-4-1 Pac-10) closed out regular season play Friday earning its 11th win of the season in a 1-0 victory against cross-state rival Washington (0-17-3, 0-9-0 Pac-10) in the Apple Cup of Pac-10 soccer.
'When we got into town and saw the Cougar flag flying on the Space Needle the energy on the bus was phenomenal,' said WSU Head Soccer Coach Matt Potter. 'We were super excited and we needed it as Washington brought everything we expected them to. It was a tough battle. That's the best 0-7 Pac-10 team I've ever played against and I'm sure they have a bright future ahead of them. Ultimately, we created some chances and put one away and are delighted to come away with the win.'
The two teams played 40 minutes of scoreless soccer before Carmen Anderson notched the game winner off a Megan Hyte corner kick. Anderson got her head on the ball finding the back of the net from 12-yards out. The tally marked Anderson's team leading seventh goal of the season.
Washington came out on the offensive in the second half launching a barrage of shots as they looked to knot the game at 1-1. WSU keeper Katie Hultin made five stops in the second half preserving the shutout and earning her 10th win of the season. Washington keeper Kelsey Rasmussen had three saves in the contest.
The Huskies out shot Washington State 9-6 including a 7-1 run in the second half. Carmen Anderson led the Cougar offense with three shots, two on goal. Shaye Harrel, Anna Miller and Hyte each added one.
'I'm so proud of this team,' Potter continued. 'I can't say enough about these players. Along with the staff and all the folks behind the scenes, it's just been a wonderful year of Cougar soccer and I'm super proud of everyone involved.'
The Cougars end the regular season with hopes of earning an at large bid to the 2005 NCAA Tournament which begins play Friday, Nov. 11. Selections will be announced Monday, Nov. 7 between 5-5:30 p.m. EST on ESPNews.
