USC Hands Arizona State Soccer 1-0 Road Loss in Overtime
Nov. 4, 2005
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - For the eighth time this season, the Arizona State University soccer team saw its match head to overtime and, unfortunately for the Sun Devils, saw the match end in a loss as the host USC Trojans defeated the Sun Devils, 1-0, in the first overtime period Friday night in Los Angeles. The loss dropped ASU to 9-7-3 overall on the season and 4-3-1 in the Pac-10 Conference while USC improved to 11-5-2 on the year and 5-2-1 in the league.
In what turned out to be a defensive battle between two of the top offensive sides in the Pac-10 this year, both teams were limited to eight shots in the 96 minutes of play. Following a scoreless regulation, the Trojans capitalized in overtime as Amy Rodriguez tallied the golden goal at 96:07 (just over six minutes into the extra session).
Overall, Kim Bingham tallied three saves in the match while her counterpart, Veronica Simonton, stopped both Sun Devil attempts on goal. Elizabeth Bogus led ASU with four shots in the match while Haley Stein, Manya Makoski, Brittany Cooper and Kylla Sjoman each had one shot.
The Sun Devils, who are 1-5-3 overall in overtime matches this year, close out the regular season Sunday at 1 p.m. PST as they battle No. 4 UCLA at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles. From there, the Sun Devils will await word from the NCAA Selection Committee to see if they will be invited to the 64-team tournament.
