Bruin Rowers Show Depth At Newport Rowing Festival

Newport Beach, Calif. - UCLA showcased its depth at the Newport Rowing Festival, placing first and fifth in the women's open eight and first in the freshman/novice eight events.
In the women's open eight, the UCLA 'A' boat of Liz Pallas-Jacobs, Jessica Fritz, Erin Rice, Patricia Dudziec, Vanessa Teff, Erin Haggerty, Elizabeth Lee, Leah Wachtel and Megan McQuown started first ahead of Sacramento State. They rowed aggressively and opened up the gap by an additional 23 seconds throughout the race, finishing in a time of 15:55. Sacramento State placed second with a time of 16:18, followed by San Diego State (16:21) and San Diego (16:30). The UCLA 'B' boat of Jessica Holt, Brittany Merchant, Elizabeth Herron, Alexandra Howard, Clara Cartwright, Larisa Pender-Healy, Alexis Kalionzes, Jaclyn Roewe and Kirsten Potenza started deep in the pack, 21st, then overtook four boats in recording the fifth-best elapsed time, 16:34. The UCLA B boat beat all but four A boats, as well as all other schools' B boats.
For the third consecutive year, UCLA won the freshman/novice eight event in a time of 17:17, narrowly beating out USC, which finished in a time of 17:22. Rowing for the Bruins' frosh eight were Katja Wanberg, Victoria Kaso, Kerry Kilduff, Candace Ferguson, Jennifer Weber, Laura Garnett, Bree Hemingway, Meleana Carr, and Chanel Suares.
