Blake and Kharbush Place at EMU Open
Nov. 7, 2005
Stanford made its final push toward the regular season by competing at a pair of open tournaments this weekend, as the Cardinal placed two seniors at the Eastern Michigan Open and had a strong showing at the Menlo College Open.
'This weekend helps us start the season in a positive manner,' noted head coach Kerry McCoy. 'Our guys went out and competed hard. We have improvements to make, but it was good for us to see where we are heading into the beginning of our season. After last weekend, we have some time to refocus and set our goals for the beginning of the official season. Missouri is ranked 14th in the country and they have a couple of highly ranked guys, so we have to be ready to go out and compete.'
Ray Blake posted four-straight wins to make it the finals at 165 pounds, including a 5-2 victory over 15th-ranked Deonte Penn of Edinboro in the semifinals. Imad Kharbush advanced to the semifinals with a trio of decisions, before injury defaulting out of the tournament. Senior Ryan Hagen and junior Ian Bork also competed, Hagen was knocked out of the main draw in the first match by 11th-ranked Alex Clemsen of Edinboro, but rebounded with a pair of shutout victories. Bork notched a pin in his first match, before falling in the second round.
At Menlo, several Stanford wrestlers competedA unattached against athletes from junior colleges and other universities at the unofficial tournament.
Stanford will travel to Kansas City this Friday to take on No. 14 Missouri in its first dual of the 2005-06 season.
