USC Powers Up For 82-55 Exhibition Win Over Team Concept
Nov. 7, 2005
LOS ANGELES -- The USC women's basketball team overcame a slow start to its exhibition game against Team Concept to post a resounding 82-55 win at the Lyon Center on Monday night. Five Trojans finished in double figures, and all nine players who hit the floor scored en route to USC's second exhibition win of the season. The clash brought back two former Trojan players -- Rometra Craig and Kim Gipson -- who scored eight points apiece for Team Concept. The 2005-06 Women of Troy had the final word, however, with Camille LeNoir leading the way with 18 points for USC in the win.
After being locked at 4-4 at the 14:30 mark of the game, the Women of Troy picked up the pace and went on a 20-0 run thanks to numerous defensive stops and some hot-handed work from sophomore guard LeNoir (Los Angeles, Calif./Narbonne HS) and junior center Chloe Kerr (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS). A pair of early 3-pointers from LeNoir built up a 12-4 lead, and Kerr later finished off the Trojans' scoring streak with a jumper and a three-point play. Although Team Concept staged a short comeback attempt, USC's balanced offense kicked back in, and the Trojans took their largest lead of the half at 30-7 on a 3-pointer from Allison Jaskowiak (Chesterfield, Mo,/Parkway West HS). USC took a 42-23 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Trojans maintained that lead despite six foul calls against USC. At the 9:47 mark in the half, Team Concept committed its first foul of the half, and junior guard Jamie Hagiya (Torrance, Calif./South Torrance HS) punched in the two free throws. Soon after, Hagiya nailed a 3-pointer to boost USC to a 60-37 lead. Team Concept's Constance Jinks -- who finished with a game-high 21 points -- and Amber White cut the score to 62-46, but the small run was short-lived. LeNoir sparked another USC run with a 3-pointer, and senior guard Meghan Gnekow (Santa Ynez, Calif./Santa Ynes Cty. Union HS) pumped the Trojans to their largest lead of the game at 73-46 on a fadeaway jumper with four minutes left to play. Before game's end, Kristen Travers (Trabuco Canyon, Calif./El Toro HS) added a three of her own, and Simone Jelks (South Euclid, Ohio/Charles F. Brush HS) became the ninth Trojan to score with just seconds left to play.
Finishing in double figures for the Women of Troy were LeNoir (18 points), Kerr (16), Hagiya (15), Gnekow (10) and Jaskowiak (10). Hagiya was just two assists shy of a double-double, and Gnekow finished with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Women of Troy -- ranked No. 22 in USA Today/ESPN's preseason poll -- open the regular season in Hawai'i at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic in Honolulu from Nov. 19-20. There, USC will face the host Rainbows and also Eastern Illinois. The Trojans' home opener is against TCU at 1 p.m. on Dec. 4 at the Sports Arena.
