No. 9 Cal to Host Stanford in Final Regular Season Game

BERKELEY - CAL TO HOST STANFORD: No. 9 (according to Soccer Times) Cal finishes out the regular season at home this weekend when the Bears host Stanford, Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. at Edwards Stadium. Cal is currenlty 12-3-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the Pac-10, while Stanford is 4-10-3, 1-6-2 in the Pac-10. Cal is second in the conference behind UCLA, while Stanford is sixth.

BEARS DEFEAT SDSU IN OVERTIME: Senior forward Calen Carr scored the game-winning goal in overtime Nov. 4 to lift the Bears past No. 16 San Diego State, 2-1. Sophomore Jeff Serafini, who has seen action in nine game, put the Bears ahead 1-0 when he scored his first goal of the season in the 67th minute. Andrew Jacobson assisted on the play, recording his fourth assist for 2005. With eight minutes left to play in the game, SDSU's Heath Creager tied the game 1-1, when he headed the ball into the net. Six minutes into the first overtime, Luke Sassano passed the ball to Carr who found the open net, recording his sixth game-winning goal of the season. Sassano recorded his sixth assist for the year.

CAL TIE'S UCLA IN DOUBLE OVERTIME: Cal tied UCLA, 1-1, in an exciting overtime game Nov. 6 in front of Cal's largest crowd so far this year (800). Both teams went scoreless through 82 minutes of play, until UCLA's Kamani Hill put the Bruins ahead 1-0. Six minutes later with the clock winding down, Cal's Eric Ebert tied the game 1-1 with an assist from Carr in the 88th minute. While both teams had scoring opportunities in double overtime, neither could find the open net, and the UCLA Bruins clinched the 2005 Pac-10 title with the tie.

LOOKING AT THE POLLS: Cal is ranked No. 9 in the Soccer Times poll, while Soccer America has the Bears tabbed at and No. 15.

BEARS AS A TEAM: As a team, Cal is currently leading the Pac-10 in points (83), goals (31), and goals per game (1.82). The Bears are second in the conference in shots, with 227. Cal is fourth in the nation with a goals-against average of .52 and third in the NCAA with a shots on goal save percentage of .877.

KRONBERG SOLID FOR BEARS: Senior goalkeeper Eric Kronberg has recorded seven shutouts this season and is currently third in the Pac-10 in that category. Kronberg is third in the nation with shots on goal save percentage of .871, and fourth in the conference in saves, with 61. Todd Harmon holds the record for the most shutouts in one season at Cal, when he recorded 11 during the 1986 season.

LEADER OF THE PAC: Senior forward Calen Carr is currently leading the Pac-10 in seven categories, which marks the third straight week he has done so. The Berkeley native is first in shots (67), shots per game (3.94), points (23), points per game (1.35), goals (10), goals per game (0.59) and game-winning goals (6).

CARR MAKES HISTORY: Calen Carr recorded his 10th goal last weekend against SDSU. Peter Woodring was the last Cal player to score 10 in a season during the 1987 campaign.

SENIOR SCORERS: Together, seniors Calen Carr, Pieter Berger, Tyson Wahl and Angel Quintero have tallied 20 out of Cal's 31 goals this season. Ten of those goals have been game-winners.

BEARS STINGY ON DEFENSE: Cal has allowed its opponents only nine goals this season, while the Bears have recorded 31.

SASSANO ASSISTS: Luke Sassano is currently leading the team in assists, with six, and is fourth in the Pac-10 in that category. Andrew Jacobson is tied for seventh in the conference in assists, with four.


STANFORD: The Cardinal, which are 4-10-3, 1-6-2 in the Pac-10, were defeated by UCLA last Friday, 1-0 in overtime. Stanford then tied San Diego State, 0-0, in double overtime Nov. 6. Stanford's Marcus Ryan currently leads the team in goals (4) and game-winning goals (2). The Cardinal keeper, Andrew Kartunen, has recorded four shutouts and 36 saves this season. In their last meeting, Cal defeated Stanford, 1-0 (10/8). Stanford leads the all-time series against the Bears, 19-12-7.
