UCLA Men's Soccer Alumni Update

Nov. 8, 2005

Three former Bruins were selected to the U.S. national team for a Nov. 12 friendly against Scotland in Glasgow. Midfielder Benny Feilhaber (2003-04), who has been playing with Hamburg SV in the German Bundesliga, got his first call-up with the senior team. Joining him on the 20-man squad are defenders Jimmy Conrad (1996-97) of the Kansas City Wizards and Carlos Bocanegra (1997-99) of Fulham FC in England.

Feilhaber, a former Bruin walk-on, is the third member of the U.S. Under-20 World Youth Championship Team on the roster for this week's game. Defender Jonathan Spector and midfielder Eddie Gaven also come from the U-20 team that advanced to the round of 16. This time last year, Feilhaber was coming off a weekend in which he scored the game-winning goal at Washington to clinch the Pac-10 title for UCLA.

Conrad, another former Bruin walk-on, was a starter on UCLA's 1997 NCAA Championship squad and recently was named the 2005 MLS Defender of the Year.

Bocanegra also started on UCLA's 1997 NCAA Championship team and led the Bruins back to the College Cup during an All-American campaign in 1999. He was the MLS Defender of the Year in 2002 and 2003 and is now playing in the English Premiere League.

The U.S.-Scotland game will be televised live on Fox Soccer Channel on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 8 am PT.

Five Bruin alums will be playing in the MLS Cup Final on Sunday, Nov. 13 - Los Angeles Galaxy players Kevin Hartman (1995-96), Cobi Jones (1988-91), Pete Vagenas (1996-99) and Mike Enfield (2001-04), and New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis (1994-97). Hartman, Jones, Vagenas and Reis were all members of the Galaxy's 2002 MLS Championship team. Jones won an NCAA title at UCLA in 1990, Vagenas and Reis were teammates on the 1997 NCAA Championship squad, and Enfield won with the Bruins in 2002. Former Bruins will be battling on the sidelines as well - former Bruin assistant coach Steve Sampson is now the Galaxy head coach, and former UCLA player and assistant coach David Vanole (1981-85) is an assistant coach with the Revolution.

The MLS Cup Final will be televised live on ABC at 12:30 pm PT.
