#18 Golden Bears Too Much For Sun Devils
Nov. 11, 2005
BERKELEY, Calif. -
The Arizona State Volleyball team left the Bay Area without a victory for the fourth straight year, as they fell to # 18 Cal in three games, 31-29, 30-17, 32-30. ASU is now 7-18 on the year, 2-12 in postseason play. It was the Sun Devils 13th loss to a team ranked in the Top 25 this season.
Freshman Margie Giordano led the Sun Devils with 14 kills, while sophomore Sydney Donahue once again led the Sun Devils in digs, posting 37. Donahue needs 76 digs in the final four contests to match the ASU single season record for digs, set by Mindy Gowell in 1990.
Despite the 3-0 final outcome, ASU played the Bears tight in Games One and Three. Cal had to go to extra points to win the first game 31-29, and then easily took game two 30-17. Trailing two games to none in the third game, ASU had a 28-26 lead. Cal battled back to score three straight points, but two service errors gave ASU a tie at 30. Cal would hold on to win 32-30 in the third game to earn the victory.
The Sun Devils return home next weekend as they host UCLA and USC in the final home matches of the year. Friday night's meeting with the Bruins begins at 7 p.m. MST, while Saturday night's tilt with the Women of Troy is also at 7. Saturday night will be Senior Night, as ASU honors Giovana Melo and Sarah Watkins who wil be playing their final matches at Wells Fargo Arena.
