UCLA Defeats UC Irvine in Match Play Championships

The top-seeded UCLA women's golf team defeated UC Irvine in the first round of the Collegiate Match Play Championship, hosted by the Mission Inn Resort at Howie-in-the-Hills, FL.

Freshmen Jane Park and Tiffany Joh, and senior Susie Mathews each won their matches to clinch the victory for the Bruins. Sophomore Brianna Loyear earned a half point by halving her match.

Park won 2 & 1 against Carling Cho. Cho rallied from two holes down to square the score at the 15th, but Park won the 16th and 17th holes to clinch the match.

Joh won 6 & 5 against Selanee Henderson. The match was all-square through the sixth hole until Joh won six of the final seven holes.

Mathews defeated Kim Lorenzana in a match of rallies and comebacks. At the 12th, Mathews went up by three holes only to watch her lead dwindle to one at the 15th. But she won the 16th and halved the 17th to capture the deciding point.

UCI's Jane Chin defeated UCLA freshman Ryann O'Toole 3 & 2 and UCLA's Brianna Loyear and UCI's Angela Won halved.

In the second round matches, the Bruins were ahead 4-0-1 against Michigan State when darkness forced the suspension of play.
