Rubin Granted a Sixth Season, Is Eligible To Play In 2005-06

Nov. 14, 2005

The NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Staff approved UCLA senior Janou Rubin's request for a sixth season today, making him eligible for the 2005-06 men's college basketball season.

Student-athletes, in general, have a five-year eligibility 'clock' that starts when they first enroll (full time) in college and concludes five years later.

They can compete in no more than four seasons within that five year window of time. In cases where a student-athlete has completed his or her five-year window of time and was denied the opportunity to compete in four seasons by having missed at least two seasons beyond his or her control, the student-athlete may petition the NCAA for a five-year waiver based on their personal extenuating circumstances. Cases are not co! nsidered until after the completion of the five-year window. Cases where an injury either prevented a student-athlete from competing at all, or reduced competition to what leads to an approved medical hardship season, are considered by the NCAA to be beyond the student-athlete's control. Upon receipt of the appropriate medical documentation related to Rubin's chronic knee problems, the NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Staff on Monday approved the five-year waiver.

Rubin, a 6-3 guard from Logan HS in Union City, CA, last season missed the final 19 games with a left knee injury (that required surgery) and as a sophomore in 2001-02, he did appear in a game because of chronic knee problems. A walkon in 2000-01, Rubin had his best Bruin season in 2003-04. That year he appeared in a career-high 27 games, with career-high averages of 14.8 minutes, 4.4 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists. He also earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors that season for his efforts in UCLA s opening home conference wins over the Oregon schools.

Now eligible to play, Rubin will wear jersey No. 10.
