Washington Cruises By Wisconsin-Green Bay, 87-54

Nov. 14, 2005

SEATTLE (AP) - Bobby Jones scored 17 points - seven during a decisive and quick, 13-0 run eight minutes into the first half - as Washington coasted to a 87-54 win over Wisconsin-Green Bay in the semifinals of the Black Coaches Association Classic Monday evening.

Washington (2-0) advanced to Tuesday night's championship game against the winner of Monday's late semifinal between Air Force and Miami.

Wisconsin-Green Bay (1-1) plays the loser of that late game to decide the third place in the season-opening tournament.

Jones, one of three senior starters on an unranked Husky team with five freshman, led Washington in scoring for the second consecutive night. He also fed fellow senior Brandon Roy, the new team leader with Nate Robinson departing from last season's 29-6 team, with a stylish lob pass that Roy punctuated with a soaring dunk early in the second half. That was during an 8-0 spurt that buried the Phoenix in a 19-point hole - which grew throughout the runaway second half.

Ryan Evanochko scored 13 points and Terry Evans had 12 to lead Wisconsin-Green Bay. Ryan Tillema, whose 18 points in Sunday's opening win over UNC-Greensboro was the most for a debuting Phoenix freshman in 22 years, missed all six of his shots and went scoreless.

Unlike in Washington's season-opening, 118-51 race past Morgan State, the Huskies were not able to run wild through turnovers off their constant pressure defense. Instead, they had to navigate Wisconsin-Green Bay's zone-trap defense to create half-court offense.

No matter. Junior reserve guard Paul Burmeister provided outside shooting (5 for 8) in the half court while scoring 12 points and was one of five Huskies in double-figure scoring. And for the second straight game, Roy seemed content to get his new mates acclimated with each other instead of scoring.

Roy, on the preseason watch list for the Wooden Award that goes to the nation's best player, scored 11 points on only nine shots, but had five assists.
