Four Buffs Named To Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team

BOULDER-The University of Colorado had four student-athletes named to the Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball First Team for the 2005 season as announced by the Big 12 league office.

 

Redshirt freshman Alex Buth, sophomore Therese Vinal, and seniors Nicole Carr and Lynsey Mann all have maintained a GPA of over 3.2.

 

Buth, a 5-10 right side, business administration major from East Grand Rapids, Mich. was named to the team for the first time after sitting out last season using her redshirt.  This year she has seen action in 61 of the teams 87 games usually to use her dangerous jump-serve which has earned her a team-high 24 aces.

 

Vinal, a 5-8 defensive specialist and broadcast news major from Santa Clara, Calif., is being honored for the first time.  Vinal has recorded 181 digs this season and recorded 17 service aces as the team's libero in most of the 74 games she has appeared in.

 

Carr, a 6-0 outside hitter, accounting major from Wauwatosa, Wis. has earned her third Academic All-Big 12 first team honor.  Carr is CU's active career leader in digs with 1,112 and is one kill away from her 200th of the season.  Carr is one of three spikers to play in every game this season.

 

Mann, a 6-3 middle blocker, psychology major from Highland Ranch, Colo., is the third member earning this honor for the first time.  After transferring from Western State, Mann was forced to miss half of the 2004 season with an injury but has returned this year to currently be ranked fourth on the team with a .245 hitting percentage.

 

Nominated by each institutions director of student-athlete support services and the sports information offices, the volleyball academic all-league squad consisted of 52 first team members with nine on the second team.  To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher either cumulative or over the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests.  Freshman and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
