Huskies Place Five on Pac-10 All-Academic Teams
Nov. 17, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Five Husky athletes were named to the Pac-10's All-Academic cross country first- or second-teams Thursday, equaling Oregon State for the third-highest total in the conference. Ten additional Husky runners earned honorable mention, leaving the UW just one shy of its record total of 16 All-Academic honorees set last season.
To be eligible for Pac-10 All-Academic honors, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic year at their current institution, must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point-average and must be a starter or significant contributor.
Included among the team's five first- or second-team honorees were four of the seven runners who will lead UW's men's team at the NCAA Championships on Monday. Junior Travis Boyd was Washington's lone first-team representative, his 3.72 GPA in marketing earning the Mukilteo, Wash., native first-team honors for the third consecutive season.
The team's No. 4 finisher at last week's NCAA West Regional Championships, Boyd was joined by second-teamers Andy Fader (Sr., 3.42, Economics), Mark Mandi (Sr., 3.34, Mechanical Engineering), and Kevin Peters (Sr., 3.45, Psychology). each of whom helped lead UW to a tie for fourth at the regional meet and the Huskies' second NCAA Championships berth in the last three seasons.
Just one Husky women's runner earned the Pac-10's All-Academic honor, as the four true freshmen who have led UW throughout year were not eligible for nomination. Senior Angela Wishaar captured second-team honors, however, marking the fifth Pac-10 All-Academic honor of her career, including one first-team cross country award and three first-team honors on the track. The Shoreline, Wash., native, who boasts a 3.85 GPA in classics, ran fifth for UW at last week's NCAA West Regional, leading the Huskies to third.
In addition to the team's five first- or second-team honorees, 10 Huskies earned honorable mention. Men's honorable mention recipients included sophomores Jon Harding (3.27, economics), Jeremy Mineau (3.55, physiology), Carl Moe (3.06, economics) and Adam Shimer (3.04, fisheries), and juniors Brad Liber (3.18, English) and Mike Sayenko (3.35, art). Women's honorees were sophomores Kaitlin Buckingham (3.42, psychology), Trish Rasmussen (3.54, community and environmental planning), and Dani Schuster (3.59, pre-physical therapy), and junior Brianna McLeod (3.21, pre-major).
