Marbut Adds 12 To Cougar Baseball Program

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University baseball program signed 12 high school senior baseball players from the state of Washington to National Letters of Intent, Head Coach Donnie Marbut announced Thursday. The group will enroll at Washington State beginning in the fall of 2006.
The class consists of Chadwick Arnold (Southridge HS, Kennewick),Josh Ashenbrenner (Lake Washington HS, Kirkland), Cody Bartlett (Kentwood HS, Covington), Carsten Bocchi (Todd Beamer HS, Federal Way), Stephen Englund (Bellevue HS, Bellevue), Matt Fanelli (Capital HS, Olympia), Seth Harvey (River Ridge HS, Olympia), Jarett Jackson (Thomas Jefferson HS, Kent), Zachary Miller (Yelm HS, Yelm), Shawn O'Malley (Southridge HS, Kennewick), Jay Ponciano (Hudson's Bay HS, Vancouver) and Michael Weber (O'Dea HS, Seattle).
'We are as excited about the 2006 class as we can be,' said Marbut. 'This class will help us renew our goal of winning a Pac-10 championship and playing in Omaha. Coach (Travis) Jewett proved why he is one of the best, if not the best, recruiting coordinators around. His diligence, and with the help of Coach (Gregg) Swenson and Coach (Matt) Dorey, they were able to put together a class that is one of the best in the country.
'I'm very fortunate to work with such a tremendous coaching staff and being able to coach this incoming class is a privilege.'
Any further signings will be announced as they are received during the signing period.

SOUTHRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL (KENNEWICK)
Has earned two varsity letters in baseball...junior season named to All-Big-Nine League second team honors and received team's Best Pitcher Award...sophomore season helped Southridge to State 4A Championship... high school teammate of fellow signee Shawn O'Malley and current Cougars Travis Coulter and Matt Crowe.
MARBUT ON ARNOLD: 'Chad has a chance to make an immediate impact. Most scouts in the northwest consider him the best right-handed pitcher around and we are no different. (Matt) Crowe, (Travis) Coulter, (Shawn) O'Malley and Arnold have created a pipeline from one of the finest high school programs around.'
LAKE WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL (KIRKLAND)
Earned two varsity letters in baseball and three in football...named to All-KingCo first team as a junior in both baseball and football...both sports captured league titles that season and was MVP of Northwest baseball tournament...sophomore season batted league-leading .500 as team finished third at state tournament...captain and team MVP of 2005 football squad, earning All-KingCo honorable mention honors... Summer teammate of fellow signees Matt Fanelli, Zach Miller and Seth Harvey on South Sound Baseball Club...honor roll member.
MARBUT ON ASHENBRENNER: 'As a staff we recognized Josh as being one of the premier defensive infielders in the state. He has a chance to make a contribution early in his career.'
KENTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL (KENT)
Earned three varsity letters as a shortstop and second baseman...junior year was All-South Puget Sound League and all-area firs team, along with All-State second team...named team MVP following season...sophomore season team reached championship game at State tournament... member of All-Area Code team.
MARBUT ON BARTLETT: 'Cody Bartlett is fun to watch and will be even better to coach. We look at Cody as a player that can do it all. He comes from Taylor Baseball, one of the premier summer teams in the state.
TODD BEAMER HIGH SCHOOL (FEDERAL WAY)
Earned three varsity letters in baseball and two in basketball...three-time baseball captain... as a sophomore named All-South Puget Sound League first team and voted team MVP...junior year pitched posted a 6-2 record with 2.01 ERA and 56 strikeouts...led the Titans in batting average at .423...named SPSL MVP, first-team all SPSL and all-area as a pitcher by the Tacoma News Tribune...garnered All-City All-Star honors from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer...team won SPSL league title...as a senior played on the Seattle Mariners fall scout team... played on Seattle Stars baseball team during this summer with fellow signee Jarett Jackson.
MARBUT ON BOCCHI: 'The reigning MVP of the SPSL (South Puget Sound League), Carsten has battled through some injuries but he is back stronger than ever. He is a great competitor and is a summer teammate of Jarett Jackson.'
BELLEVUE HIGH SCHOOL (BELLEVUE)
Earned three varsity letters in baseball, two in football...helped baseball team to playoffs in each of first three years, earning All-KingCo first team honors as a sophomore and junior...played football as a freshman and junior and was part of two State 3-A championship teams...this past summer played with Michael Weber on Baden Baseball team, along with current Cougars Garrett Kimbrel, Nick Hall and David Roberts...maintains a 3.2 GPA.
MARBUT ON ENGLUND: 'Stephen Englund has a chance to be as good as anyone who has come through WSU. He runs, hits, fields and throws and is a special player.'
CAPITAL HIGH SCHOOL (OLYMPIA)
Earned two varsity letters under head coach Michael Spencer...captained the Cougars in both his junior and senior seasons...as a junior, led his team to a ninth place finish in the state...named all-Narrows league hitting .428 with seven doubles and two home runs as a third baseman... Summer teammate of fellow signees Josh Ashenbrenner, Zach Miller and Seth Harvey on South Sound Baseball Club...member of Area Code Team after batting .400 for South Sound team...maintains 3.69 GPA and is a National Merit Scholar.
MARBUT ON FANELLI: 'Matt is one of the better student-athlete combinations in the state. He is another player who should grow into a very fine Pac-10 player.'
RIVER RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL (OLYMPIA)
Earned three varsity letters in baseball, one in basketball...batted .373 as a junior, with two home runs and 13 doubles as he was an All-Pacific-9 League second team selection...sophomore season named Pac-9 MVP after posting 7-3 record with 2.22 ERA and 64 strikeouts...named All-State first team as a pitcher, second team as an infielder, and selected to News Tribune All-Area Corner Infielder... Summer teammate of fellow signees Matt Fanelli, Zach Miller and Josh Ashenbrenner on South Sound Baseball Club...member of Principal's List with 3.5 GPA.
MARBUT ON HARVEY: 'Seth has an explosive arm. His fastball has the ability to rival anyone in the Pac-10 in his career.'
THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL (KENT)
Earned three varsity letters in baseball, four in football and two in wrestling...as a junior batted .405 with six home runs and 27 RBIs, earned All-South Puget Sound League first team honors...named All-SPSL honorable mention as a sophomore as Thomas Jefferson reached the playoffs...was an All-SPSL first team and All-City linebacker during his junior season and team finished third in State tournament as a sophomore... played on Seattle Stars baseball team during this past summer with fellow signee Carsten Bocchi...maintains a 3.4 GPA.
MARBUT ON JACKSON: 'Jarett is a very physical player who we see hitting the ball in the parking lot for us one day. He reminds the staff of former Coug Stefan Bailie.
YELM HIGH SCHOOLM (YELM)
Earned three varsity letters in baseball, one in basketball...as a junior posted a 4-3 record with a 2.80 ERA, suffering three one-run losses...named to All-Pacific-9 League first team and was an All-State honorable mention selection...sophomore season went 3-1 with 1.77 ERA, garnering the first of two All-Pac-9 Academic honors...Summer teammate of fellow signees Matt Fanelli, Seth Harvey and Josh Ashenbrenner on South Sound Baseball Club...National Honor Society member with 3.83 GPA.
MARBUT ON MILLER: 'Zack is going to be a major contributor for us one day. We love his make up and his chance to be a dominate closer.'
SOUTHRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL (KENNEWICK)
Earned three varsity letters in baseball and football...All-Big-Nine League first team short stop as a junior...helped team to 2004 State 4A Championship during sophomore season, playing both infield and outfield...on the gridiron this past season he was the All-Big Nine League MVP, leading his team to the first round of the 4A State playoffs...team co-MVP during junior season... high school teammate of fellow signee Chadwick Arnold and current Cougars Travis Coulter and Matt Crowe...honor roll member.
MARBUT ON O'MALLEY: 'Shawn might be one of the best athletes in the state. He showed the state what he could do on the football field this year and we expect him to be even better on the baseball field.'
HUDSON'S BAY HIGH SCHOOL (VANCOUVER)
Earned three varsity letters in baseball, two each in football and basketball...three-year starting catcher...batted .404 as a junior, earning All-Greater St. Helens League first team, all-region and all-state honors for second consecutive season... team captain, led team to undefeated regular season...sophomore season batted .390, leading team to fourth-place finish at state tournament...junior year led football team in rushing... member of 2003 USA Youth National Team, winning gold medal in world championships in Taiwan...maintains a 4.0 GPA.
MARBUT ON PONCIANO: 'Jay was the only catcher that we thought was a perfect fit for our program. He is versatile and can do many things on and off the field that will benefit WSU.'
O'DEA HIGH SCHOOL (SEATTLE)
Earned three varsity letters in both baseball and football...as a junior helped O'Dea to 3A State baseball title, defeating Columbia River 8-5 in championship game...earned All-Metro League second team honors as a junior and honorable mention following sophomore season...junior season named to All-Metro League second team as a football safety...teammate of Stephen Englund this past summer for Baden Baseball, joining future Cougar teammates Garrett Kimbrel, Nick Hall and David Roberts...maintains a 3.6 GPA.
MARBUT ON WEBER: 'Michael is an extremely gifted athlete. His great left-handed swing will give him a chance to play early in his career.'
