Nov. 18, 2005

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Washington State's Erin McCleave earned a meet and school record Friday posting a first place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:45.93 in the second session of the Minnesota Invitational.

McCleave's time bested the Minnesota Invitational meet record (4:45.99) held by 2004 Olympian Carly Piper and currently ranks as the fastest 500 freestyle time in the country. The Rutherglen, Australia native's finals performance shaved four seconds off her first session time (4:50.36) which broke the previous Washington State record of 4:53.53 set by Becca Cohen in 2002.

The swim marked McCleave's third record-setting swim of the season after she earned the 1000 freestyle record (10:06.15) Oct. 7 and the 1650 freestyle record (16:42.06) Oct. 28.

Two more Cougars made appearances in the 'A' finals with Jane Copland posting a prelim time of 2:04.99 in the 200 IM and placing third in the finals with a time of 2:04.51. The swim tied Copland's lifetime best performance in the event and earned her a U.S. Open cut. Freshman Elyse Peterson finished third in the 50 freestyle final swimming a lifetime best and earning a U.S. Open cut with a time of 23:70.

Kayli Changstrom added a win in the 500 freestyle (4:54.82) 'B' final and earned a U.S. Open cut for her performance while Jamie MacLeod added a third place finish in the 'B' final of the 50 freestyle (24.08).

The Cougars continued their strong relay performances with the 'A' relay team finishing third in the 200 freestyle relay ( 1:24.27) and the 'A' and 'B' 400 medley relay teams finishing fourth (3:28.82) and sixth (3:51.22) respectively.
