Mellouli Wins Three Times To Lead Trojan Win

Senior men's swimmer Ous Mellouli and freshman women's swimmer Rebecca Soni won three events apiece as the men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted their first victories of the season over Arizona State in Pac-10 dual meet action in Tempe on Saturday (Nov. 19).

The No. 8 Trojan men improved to 1-2 overall, 1-1 in the Pac-10 with a 173-125 win while the No. 10 Women of Troy evened their record at 1-1 overall and in the Pac-10 with a 177-121 victory.

Mellouli won the 200y (1:39.07) and the 500y free (4:28.92) as well as his specialty, the 400y IM (3:50.31, NCAA consideration).

Sophomore Viktor Bodrogi won both the 100y (49.96) and the 200y back (1:46.28, NCAA consideration) while junior Sam Masson won both the 100y (49.83) and the 200y fly (1:48.62).

Junior Sean Sussex won the 100y free (45.61) while junior Mihaly Flaskay won the 100y breast (56.00).

Soni, a two-time 2005 World University Games medallist, posted the only NCAA automatic time of the day, cruising to a crushing win in the 200y breast (2:10.95), a time not far off the school record. She also posted wins in the 100y breast (1:01.77, an NCAA consideration mark just off another automatic mark) and the 400y IM (4:19.02, NCAA consideration).

Sophomore Rhi Jeffrey, a 2004 Olympian, won the 100y (41.91) ad 200y free (1:50.51). Freshman Kristen Lahey won the 100y back (56.05, NCAA consideration) while freshman Melissa McIntyre won the 50y free (23.89). McIntyre was also second to Soni in the 100y breast (1:02.30, NCAA consideration).

Senior Blythe Hartley swept the springboard events for the second straight day while junior Cait Connealy won the 200y fly (2:01.98).

Freshman Katy Houston (4:30.00) and senior Stacy Vazhenin (4:31.18) finished behind Soni in the 400y IM in second and third, respectively. Freshman Sarah Rockwell was second in the 100y free (52.37).
