ARIZONA opens the season tonight against Kansas at the EA Sports Maui Invitational, while OREGON and UCLA continue action in the Hispanic College Fund Classic and NIT Season Tip Off respectively ... In other tourney action, USC heads north for the Carrs Great Alaska Shootout and CALIFORNIA remains home to host the Golden Bear Classic ... ARIZONA STATE will be the final Pac-10 team to get the season underway with a non-league tilt against Southern Utah on Wednesday night.


  • ARIZONA opens the season tonight against Kansas in a first round match up in the EA Sports Maui Invitational ... ARIZONA STATE opens the season at home against Southern Utah on Wed., Nov. 23 ... CALIFORNIA coach Ben Braun was inducted into the Eastern Michigan Athletic Hall of Fame during the Golden Bears' season-opener at Eastern Michigan. The next Cal victory will give Braun career win No. 500. His record stands at 499-346 (.591) in 28 seasons ... OREGON sophomore C Ray Schafer was a perfect 7-of-7 from the field and scored a career-high 15 points in Oregon's season-opening victory over Savannah State. The 83-23 victory provide Oregon with the third-largest margin of victory in school history and the Tigers' 23 points represented the fewest points the Ducks allowed to a Division I team since Oregon defeated Utah 51-15 on Jan. 2, 1941. The victory also gave coach Ernie Kent his 150th win at Oregon ... STANFORD senior Dan Grunfeld seems to have recovered from the knee injury that he suffered last season. The All-Pac-10 forward scored 29 points in Stanford's season-opener against UC-Irvine ... UCLA senior F Cedric Bozeman is off to a hot start. He's averaging 13.0 points and 5.3 rebounds through three games, while shooting 15-of-26 (.577) from the field ... USC sophomore F Nick Young posted his first career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in USC's opener vs. Cal State Northridge ... Like the 2004-05 season, WASHINGTON has opened the season with a 4-0 record. The last time the Huskies opened the year 5-0 was during the 1990-91 season ... WASHINGTON STATE sophomore G Derrick Low picked up a double-double in the Cougars' season-opening victory over UC Riverside. In addition to his 15 points/11 assists night, he added four steals while shooting 5-of-7 from the field ... Sophomore G Josh Akognon made his first collegiate start fort the Cougars and responded with career highs of 22 points and eight rebounds ... The 44 points scored by the Cougars in the first half were the most in an opening stanza during coach Dick Bennett's tenure at WSU.

  • Freshmen debuts ... California center Jordan Wilkes shot 5-of-6 from the field to score 11 points against Eastern Michigan ... In just 11 minutes of action, Oregon State guard/forward Jack McGillis hit a pair of three-pointers, scored eight points, grabbed three rebounds, dished out one assist and picked up one steal ... UCLA forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute grabbed eight rebounds pulled down eight rebounds against New Mexico State in the NIT Season Tip Off, then added another 10 boards in the second round against Temple ... USC forward RouSean Cromwell collected a double-double with 17 points (on 8-of-11 shooting) and 12 rebounds vs. Cal State Northridge ... Washington F Jon Brockman has posted a pair of double-doubles and is averaging 15.5 points and 8.5 rebounds through four games ... Forward Aron Baynes tallied 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting in Washington State's opener vs. UC Riverside.

  • Banged up Bigs in Bay Area... California sophomore F Leon Powe, the 2004 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, has a minor stress fracture in his right mid-foot and will wear a walking boot for approximately two weeks before having the injury reassessed. Stanford senior C Matt Haryasz suffered a sprained ankle the day before the season-opener and did not play against UC Irvine. His status is day-to-day. Haryasz averaged 12.5 points and 9.1 rebounds last season.

  • Tastes like chicken... UCLA freshman F Luc Richard Mbah A Moute, who is from Yaounde, Cameroon, was asked what he could tell everyone about Viper. His response, 'Oh, that's the best meat in the world. Viper and Boa. You know, the snake. That's the best mead in the world. You cook it like you cook chicken. You cut it in little pieces and cook it like normal food.'

  • Better than Viper... USC junior walk-on forward Reed Doucette, a mechanical engineering major and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society member, who wants someday to win a Nobel Prize and an Academy Award was asked if he could win only one award, which would he choose. 'If you win a Nobel Prize, you've obviously done something that merits some serious recognition and is probably more beneficial to mankind than making a crappy movie. But you might get more chicks with an Academy Award.'
