California Women's Gymnastics Signs Two Recruits

BERKELEY - Sophia Hocini (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley High School) and Nicole Day (Artesia, Calif./Richard Gahr High School) have each signed a National Letter-of-Intent to attend the University of California in the fall of 2006, head coach Cari DuBois announced today.
'I am thrilled that we were able to sign these two,' DuBois said of Hocini and Day. 'They are both incredibly talented athletes. They are going to step in and compete immediately and help bring more depth to our squad.'
A 2005 Junior Olympic National team member, Hocini, claimed first in the all-around and on the vault at the Junior Olympic National Championship. Her club team, Southern California Elite Gymnastics Academy, went undefeated in Level 10 in their 2005 competitions. Prior to her experience in Level 10, she was the Level nine Western National beam and all-around champion.
'I am very excited about being signed with Cal,' Hocini said. 'It is a great fit for me, and I can't wait to begin my experience there!'
Day, placed third in the all-around and second on the bars at the 2005 Junior Olympic Nationals. She was the Level 10 2005 Regional all-around champion. A two-time Level 10 State all-around champion, Day, qualified for Senior National Elites at the 2005 Scats Surf City Classics. A steady force in Level 10 for the past five years, Day is a member of the Scats club team.
'I am excited to have signed with Berkeley. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to attend an exceptional University such as Cal,' Day said.
The Golden Bears are currently prepping for their season which begins on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at the Aloha Gymfest in Oahu, Hawaii.
