Stanford Enjoys Thanksgiving On The Road
Nov. 24, 2005
Los Angeles, Ca - If you have to spend your Thanksgiving on the road, you might as well spend it on a sunny, warm beach in Southern California enjoying a Thanksgiving feast with family and friends.
That was the agenda on Thanksgiving in the year 2005 for the nationally-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team. For the second straight year, the Cardinal was on the road in preparation for two Pac-10 matches. Last year, Stanford ate Thanksgiving dinner at a hotel in Phoenix enroute to league matches at Arizona State and Arizona. This year, the Thanksgiving weekend schedule has Stanford playing at UCLA on Friday night (7 p..m.) and USC on Saturday night (7 p.m.).
So on this Thanksgiving, the day started early in the morning when the Cardinal boarded a bus on the Stanford campus. The team was surprisingly in a good mood as each team member greeted each other with a 'Happy Thanksgiving.'
After the plane ride from San Jose to Los Angeles and after the team checked into its hotel in the early afternoon, the Cardinal women boarded a bus that transported them to the Jonathan Club on Santa Monica Beach to join family and friends for a hearty Thanksgiving dinner.
Much like the Bay Area weather in recent weeks, the weather in Southern California was warm and sunny. After dinner, several team members watched the Southern California sunset or enjoyed conversations with teammates, friends and family.
Stanford will face a stern test this week with matches at UCLA and USC to close out the 2005 Pac-10 season. The Bruins, ranked 16th in the nation, are 17-9 overall and 9-7 in the Pac-10. UCLA has won six of its last seven matches including a dramatic 3-2 victory over then second-ranked and previously unbeaten Washington Huskies at Pauley Pavilion. Saturday at 7 p.m., Stanford will face USC which is 15-9 overall, 11-5 in the Pac-10 and ranked 13th in the nation.
The field for the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship will be announced on Sunday, November 27, between 11:30 and Noon (pt) on ESPNNEWS. The 64-team field will feature 16 seeded teams. First and second round matches will take place at 16 campus sites across the country while the four regionals will be held at Stanford (Dec. 9-10), Omaha, Neb., State College, Pa., and College State, Texas. The NCAA Final Four will take place Dec. 15 and 17 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Stanford head coach John Dunning loves to read ... On every road trip, before he boards the plane, Dunning buys at least one paperback and will read it cover to cover before the end of the trip ... This time, Dunning has purchased The Broker by John Grisham, which has been on the New York Times bestseller list ... This book contains 418 pages, and by the early evening, Dunning had read nearly 125 pages ... 418 pages sounds likes a lot of pages to consume on this short road trip which ends on Sunday morning, but as Dunning quips, 'it's easy reading ... the type on the pages is big.' ... HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM THE STANFORD WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAM.
