WSU Falls To Hawaii 68-63

HONOLULU - Washington State's Charmaine Jones led all scorers with 16 points and Kate Benz pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars fell to the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine 68-63 in an opening round game of the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic, Friday.
WSU dropped to 2-1 while Hawaii improved to 2-1. The Cougars return to action against Idaho State, Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Pacific.
In addition to Jones' and Benz's double-digit effort, Adriane Ferguson added 10 points for WSU. With her rebounding performance, Benz - the defending Pacific-10 Conference rebounding champion - posted her fourth career-game with at least 15 rebounds. Brittany Grice led Hawaii with 14 points.
WSU held a 41-35 halftime advantage but was outscored 33-22 in the second half, as the Cougars shot 6-of-33 from the field during the final 20 minutes. Hawaii shot 8-of-30 from the field as well, but made 17-of-20 from the line in the second half while WSU was 10-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Down 44-35 nearly two minutes in to the second half, the Wahine outscored WSU 11-2 to tie the game at 46 with 10:41 remaining. That marked the first of eight ties during the second half.
With the eighth, and final, tie at 57 with 3:38 left, the Wahine scored five consecutive points to go up 62-57 with 1:09 remaining. The Cougars would pull to within three at 64-61 with 35 seconds left but was unable to close the gap any further.
