Stanford Tops Cal Poly, 82-58

Nov. 28, 2005

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Matt Haryasz had 16 points and 12 rebounds to help Stanford win its second straight game after a disappointing season-opening loss, 82-58 over Cal Poly on Monday night.

Chris Hernandez added a season-high 22 points for the Cardinal (2-1), who improved to 5-1 against the Mustangs. Cal Poly's only win over the Cardinal occurred in 1976.

Taj Finger had 13 points and Dan Grunfeld added 11 for Stanford.

Haryasz recorded his second straight double-double and the 13th of his career.

Dawin Whiten scored 22 points to lead the Mustangs (1-3), who lost their third straight. Whiten left the game after sustaining a left leg injury with 6:14 remaining.

Cal Poly, picked to finish eighth in the Big West, began a stretch in which it plays seven of nine games on the road through Jan. 7, while Stanford goes on the road for six of its next seven games.

The Cardinal were knocked out of the national poll after losing to Big West member UC Irvine 12 days ago. The Anteaters were chosen to finish sixth.

Stanford began to make amends against the Mustangs, though it took a 15-6 run to open the second half to give the Cardinal some breathing room.

With Finger and Haryasz maintaining control of the post, Stanford was able to cool down the Mustangs and take advantage of Cal Poly's foul situation to slowly build its lead.

The Mustangs made just five of their first 20 shots in the second half while Stanford made 13 of 26.

Despite 12 turnovers, a distinct rebounding disadvantage, and putting Stanford on the foul line for 18 attempts, the Mustangs hung around in the first half because of their strong shooting, which included a 4-of-6 effort from 3-point range.

Cal Poly shot 56 percent in the half and was within 35-31 with 4:40 remaining after Tyler McGinn hit a 3-pointer.

The Mustangs went scoreless the next 4:37 before Derek Stockalper hit a desperation shot at the end of the half to close the gap to 40-33 at the half.
