ARIZONA's Robert Cheseret and STANFORD's Arianna Lambie were named the Pacific-10 Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Year, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Cheseret, a junior from Kapsabet, Kenya, successfully defended his Pac-10 title when he crossed the line in 23:57 to become the second Arizona runner, and ninth runner in Pac-10 history, to win back-to-back conference titles. Cheseret went on to capture the NCAA West Regional individual crown (30:03) and was the Pac-10's top finisher at the NCAA Championships with a tenth place finish (29:51).

Lambie, a sophomore from Harvard, Mass., took top honors at the Pac-10 Championships with a clocking of 20:20, and finished first (19:29) at the NCAA West Regional. She was the Pac-10's top finisher at the NCAA Championships with an eighth place finish (20:00) in leading the Cardinal to their third NCAA title. Lambie is the sixth different Cardinal to earn Pac-10 Athlete of the Year honors.

CALIFORNIA freshman Mark Matusak, from Torrance, Calif., was named the Men's Cross Country Newcomer of the Year. He was the top placing freshman at the Pac-10 Championships, finishing 17th (24:56). His performance was key in leading the Golden Bears to a third place finish at the Pac-10 Championships, which was their best showing ever at the Pac-10 Championships. Matusak is the first California runner to earn Athlete of the Year or Newcomer of the Year honors.

WASHINGTON freshman Tori Tyler, from Los Altos, Calif., was named the Women's Cross Country Newcomer of the Year. Tyler was the top finishing Husky at the Pac-10 Championships, earning second team All-Conference honors with an eighth place finish (21:05). Her finish helped lead the Huskies to a fourth place showing at the Pac-10 Championships. She is the first Washington runner to earn either Athlete of the Year or Newcomer of the Year honors.

Also announced were the Conference Coach of the Year honors. Stanford's Peter Tegen was honored as both the Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year and Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year.

Tegen, in his first year at Stanford, led the Cardinal women to their third NCAA title. Along the way, the Cardinal women picked up their tenth consecutive Pac-10 title, and their 12th league title overall. On the men's side, Tegen guided the Cardinal to their sixth consecutive Pac-10 crown, and their ninth league title overall. The Stanford men were the top finishing Pac-10 team at the NCAA Championships with a sixth-place showing.

The honors were decided by a vote of the Conference's cross country coaches.
