Bears in 4th Place on Day 2 of Texas Invite

AUSTIN, Texas - Third-ranked California boasted several top eight finishes at tonight's finals but dropped to fourth place on the second day of the Texas Invitational at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The Cal A squad of freshman David Russell, senior Henrique Barbosa, sophomore Jernej Godec and junior Jonas Tilly had the Golden Bears' best finish of the night, taking third place in the 200-yard medley relay. Cal swam an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:28.98 behind first-place Arizona (1:25.93) and runner-up USC (1:27.13). Cal's time was also the top time in the event this season for the Bears.
Russell also placed in the top 10 of the 100-yard backstroke, swimming a provisional qualifying time of 48.85 to take eighth place. Cal's top individual finish belonged to sophomore diver Javier Rivas, who added a sixth-place finish (260.00) in the one-meter springboard to his fifth-place finish on the three-meter board yesterday.
Sophomore Louis Vayo had Cal's best finish in the 400 individual medley, placing seventh with a Cal season-best 3:54.60. Barbosa and junior teammate Graham Lentz finished seventh (55.51) and eighth (55.90), respectively, in the 100 breaststroke. Barbosa's time was an NCAA provisional qualifying time.
The Cal A quartet of Vayo, sophomore Garrett Wagner, junior Daniel Lysaught and sophomore Dominik Meichtry ended the night with a sixth-place finish and the Bears' best time of the season (6:38.10) in the 800-free relay.
The third and final day of the Texas Invitational begins with preliminary events at 10 a.m. CT tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 3.
