Cal Signs Top Recruit for the 2006-2007

BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team signed Nina Henkel for the 2006-07 season, head coach Jan Brogan announced Wednesday.
Henkel will join the Golden Bears with an abundance of international competition experience. In September Henkel, who is currently finishing high school in Espenau, Germany, was a singles semifinalist at the 2005 U.S. Open in Flushing, New York for junior girls. Prior to that she was a quarterfinalist in singles play at the BMW Open in Luxembourg, as well as the doubles winner with Elena Kulikova from Russia. Last summer she was a singles semifinalist at the European Junior Individual Closed Championships.
Henkel is currently ranked 37th according to the International Tennis Federation. She started playing tennis when she was six years old and is coached by her father, Peter Henkel. Her ambition is 'to be in the top 10 in the world.'
