Dec. 20, 2005

BERKELEY - The California's 2004 men's track and field recruiting class has been ranked No. 5 nationally by Track and Field News in a recent issue.

Led by distance runner Mark Matusak, who has recently been named to the Junior All-American squad, the class boasts several distance runners who have finished their first collegiate cross country campaigns this fall. Matusak earned newcomer of the year honors from the Pac-10, after finishing 17th (24:56) at the Pac-10 Championships in Tucson, Ariz. Distance runners Yosef Ghebray and Jake Schmitt along with hurdler Jake Hanson join Matusak in the class of 2009.

This is the second consecutive year the Cal men's track and field program has finished in the top five for recruiting classes. Last year, the Golden Bears ranked No. 1 nationally.
