Zizzo Selected To Soccer America's All-Freshman Team

Freshman midfielder Sal Zizzo (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry HS) was selected to the Soccer America All-Freshman Second Team. Zizzo, the Pac-10's Freshman of the Year, played in all 20 of UCLA's games, making 16 starts and helping the Bruins win their fourth consecutive Pac-10 Conference title. Zizzo scored one goal and five assists on the year, ranking second on the squad in assists and fifth in points scored with seven. He was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week on Sept. 6 after scoring a goal and two assists in his first collegiate start in the Bruins' 4-0 upset win over then-No. 2 Maryland.

Zizzo was earlier named to the College Soccer News All-Freshman First Team and to the Top Drawer Soccer All-Rookie team and was a second-team All-Pac-10 selection.

In other UCLA soccer news, five former Bruins were called up to the U.S. National Team's training camp, which begins on Jan. 4 at The Home Depot Center. Three of the four goalkeepers in camp are from UCLA - Kevin Hartman (1995-96), Matt Reis (1994-97) and Zach Wells (2000-03). Joining them are defenders Jimmy Conrad (1996-97) and Frankie Hejduk (1992-94). The group will be training for a series of friendlies to take place in January and February. The U.S. will open 2006 action against Canada on Jan. 22 in San Diego (5 p.m. PT), then host Norway on Jan. 29 at The Home Depot Center (2 p.m. PT, ESPN2).
