Between The Bars

Dec. 29, 2005

Hi All!

I just got back from snowy Canada. We all reported back to UCLA this week to officially kick off our gymnastics season! I got to spend a lot of quality time with my family at home, and although it was sad to leave them behind, it's so nice to be able to come back to such a wonderful family here. I am so excited for this season to get underway. It is going to be different from any other I've experienced, mainly because over half of our team are freshmen. The chemistry is a bit different this year. Maybe it's because so many of our teammates are new, but for whatever reason, we are all filled with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement to start competing.

During the last four months of training we've had quite a few minor surgeries. Kate broke her tibia, I had my ankle scoped, Jordan had her shoulder scoped, and Tasha just had her shoulder cleaned out. Dealing with injuries has definitely posed a challenge for us all, but I can't think of a single person on this team who doesn't love to take on a difficult task with a 'bring it on' attitude. Not once did we worry about what someone having surgery would mean to our season. Instead, everyone has pulled together to step it up, and we're having a great time doing it.

Personally, I am really enjoying being in the gym right now for a few reasons. Firstly, while not being able to train while dealing with ankle rehab, my passion for the sport was reawakened, sort of a 'you don't know what you've got till it's gone' deal. Sitting on the side rehabbing and watching the rest of our team work hard was certainly not the position I wanted, and I couldn't wait to get back out there. Coming back into everything now is more fun than ever, and I can't wait to be 100% again! Secondly, this team is so much fun to work out with. We have such great personalities and enthusiasm that every practice brings something new to look forward to. I can't tell you how much fun our freshmen are and how excited I am to watch them compete this year. With many of our upperclassmen coming back from injuries, they're going to be at the forefront of our competitive line-up, and I know they're ready and excited for that position.

We leave for Hawaii tomorrow. Hawaii is going to be a great way to start a great season! Three days after we return, we open at home against Utah, Saturday at 6:00 pm. Can't wait to see you all at the meets!

Go Bruins, GRRRR!
