Cardinal Prepares for Texas Showdown

Jan. 5, 2006

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford (1-1) will head to Grand Prairie, Texas, on Sat., Jan. 7, for the Lone Star Duals, where the Cardinal will face off against Army, North Carolina and Harvard. Stanford will face the Black Knights at 8 am, the Tar Heels at 2 pm, and the Crimson at 6 pm (all times Central).

'The Lone Star Duals is a great event that will give our program the opportunity to face teams that we may not compete against during the year,' noted head coach Kerry McCoy. 'It is also a great showcase for the sport of wrestling because there is high school and collegiate competition over the course of the weekend. We had a relatively strong finish at the end of the first half of the season, and we're ready to build on that. This weekend is the start for our team.'

Army is 2-1-2 on the season after a tough day on Thursday with a 19-19 tie against No. 23 Northern Iowa, before losing 42-0 to top-ranked Oklahoma State in Stillwater. Senior Patrick Simpson sports the squad's best record with a 13-3 record. UNC is 6-0 on the year, with three wins apiece at the Mat Jam Duals in November and at the Clarion Duals in December. The Tar Heels have three wrestlers who have already accumulated 20 or more wins. Harvard, led by eighth-ranked Bode Ogunwole at heavyweight, comes into the weekend with an 0-1 record after losing to Hofstra, 33-12, in December.

Earlier this season, the Cardinal split its dual meets, losing at #14 Missouri before posting a win at San Francisco State.
