Candice Wiggins Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

Walnut Creek, Calif. - Sophomore guard Candice Wiggins was named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 2-8, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The San Diego, Calif., native led the Cardinal to a road sweep in Oregon for the first time in her career and first time for Stanford since the 2002-03 season. The 2004-05 Kodak/WBCA All-American broke her personal scoring record on Jan. 7 at Oregon with 37 points against the Ducks, besting her previous career-high of 31 points, which she set on Jan. 7, 2005 at Arizona State.
Over the weekend, Wiggins averaged 27.5 points, 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds as she helped the Cardinal move into the Conference lead. Wiggins shot 65.6 percent from the field in the two games, and owned a 77.8 percent shooting average from beyond the three-point arc, making seven of her nine treys.
The 2004-05 Pac-10 Player and Freshman of the Year, Wiggins earned second team All-America honors from the Associated Press in 2004-05, and was also named the USBWA Co-Freshman of the Year. She is the first Pac-10 freshman to earn Player of the Year honors.
No. 16 Stanford is 10-4 on the season with a 5-1 record in Pac-10 play and has won four straight. The Cardinal hosts cross-Bay rival California on Sat., Jan. 14, at 2 p.m.
This is Wiggins' third Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and Stanford's 32nd weekly honor all-time.
