U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week

WASHINGTON STATE sophomore guard Josh Akognon was named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week following his performance in Washington State's victory at Washington.

Akognon, who hails from Petaluma, Calif., scored a career-high 27 points, shooting 9-of-16 (.563) from the field, including 6-of-10 from three-point range.

In the 78-71 win at Washington, he scored 17 of his points in the second half. His three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining broke a 71-71 tie, then he added a pair of free throws to clinch the win. He added three rebounds, two assists, and one steal in 26 minutes of action. He entered the contest averaging 8.1 points through the first 11 games of the season.

The victory was WSU's first on the road over a top-10 team in 53 games. It broke a 34-game losing streak overall against top-10 teams and snapped an 11-game skid to the Huskies in Seattle.

This is the first weekly honor for Akognon and Washington State's 16th Player of the Week honor all-time.

  • ARIZONA (10-4, 3-1)... Arizona enjoyed its best shooting week of the season by connecting on 52.7 percent (59-of-112) of its field goal attempts in the games vs. UCLA and USC. For the first time this season, Arizona shot better than 50 percent from the field in back-to-back games, including a season-best 52.8 percent (28-of-53) Saturday vs. USC. The Wildcats have shot 50 percent or better four times this season and all of those efforts have come at home ... Junior F Ivan Radenovic has upped his productivity of late by averaging 13.0 points and 7.3 rebounds in his last three games. He has connected on 15-of-28 (.536) field goal attempts and passed out eight assists. He's finished in double figures in each of those games after failing to do so in the previous five games... The Wildcats' perimeter play should receive a boost this week as sophomore G Jawann McClellan is expected to return to action this week, possibly as early as Thursday at Oregon State. McClellan was academically ineligible during the first semester. He averaged 5.8 points and 3.0 rebounds in 30 games last season, while shooting 46.8 percent from the floor.

  • ARIZONA STATE (6-7, 0-4)... ASU dropped a pair of one-point decisions last week. It's the first time the Sun Devils have been involved in back-to-back one-point games since coming up short to UCLA (87-86) and Washington State (75-74) during the 1982-83 season ... Junior F Serge Angounou scored a career-high 23 points vs. UCLA. In two games last week, Angounou shot 18-of-29 (.621) from the field and 6-of-7 (.857) from the free throw line, and averaged 21.0 points and 5.0 rebounds ... Junior G Kevin Kruger has hit at least three three-pointers in each of the last six games, shooting 20-of-45 (.444) from beyond the arc during that span. He leads the Pac-10 with 2.85 three-point field goals made per game ... ASU is 4-3 (.571) at McArthur Court under Rob Evans, where it visits Thursday. ASU has won the past two games at Mac Court.

  • CALIFORNIA (9-4, 3-1)... Junior G Ayinde Ubaka scored a career-high 29 points in Cal's win over Oregon. Sophomore F Leon Powe added 27 points in the victory. It was the first time the Bears had two or more players each score 25 points in a game since Lamond Murray (26) and Jason Kidd (25) vs. Oregon on March 3, 1994. ... Ubaka has more than doubled his scoring output from last season. He averaged 6.1 points per game in 2004-05, and is averaging 14.9 points per game this season ... Powe has scored in double digits from the charity stripe in three games this season. He was 12-of-16 from the line vs. Akron, 10-of-14 vs. Oregon and 11-of-13 vs. Oregon State. Of Powe's 175 points scored this season, 55 have come at the free throw line.

  • OREGON (7-8, 1-2)... Sophomore C Ray Schafer was impressive in 20 minutes of action at Stanford, posting 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and collecting six rebounds. He also added a pair of assists and a steal. In his previous six outings, Schafer collected a total of eight points on 3-of-8 shooting ... Sophomore G Malik Hairston scored 21 points at Stanford, his third 20-point performance of the season. Hairston had three 20-point outings for the entire 2004-05 season ... Of Hairston's 69 rebounds (4.9 rpg), 40 have come on the offensive boards (2.86 offensive rpg) ... Sophomore F Marty Leunen sprained his right ankle in the final minute of the first half at Stanford and did not return. He's status is day-to-day and is questionable for Thursday's game vs. ASU.

  • OREGON STATE (8-6, 1-2)... The Beavers snapped a 14-game road losing streak in Pac-10 play with their victory at California. It was also the first win for OSU on the Berkeley campus since the 1994-95 season ... OSU shot 14-of-24 (.583) from three-point range over the last two game ... Senior G Lamar Hurd is shooting 10-of-17 (.588) from the field over the last three games. In the previous eight games, he shot just 5-of-24 (.208) ... As a team, the Beavers have shot 50.0 percent or better in four of the last five games ... The Beavers have won 11 of their last 13 home games in league play ... OSU has won two in a row over Arizona State at Gill Coliseum and three of the last four in Corvallis ... Senior G Chris Stephens leads the Pac-10 in free throw percentage (.923), hitting 48-of-52 from the charity stripe. The OSU single-season record is 87.0 percent (67-of-77), set by Terry Baker during the 1960-61 season. That's the same Terry Baker who went on to win the Heisman Trophy in 1962.

  • STANFORD (6-6, 2-2)... With a home sweep of the Oregon schools, Stanford has won 16 of the last 18 meetings with Oregon State, and 19 of the last 21 meetings with Oregon. When it comes to playing in Maples Pavilion, the Cardinal extended their lengthy home-court winning streaks over Oregon State (13) and Oregon (20) ... Senior G Chris Hernandez needs nine points to reach 1,000 points for his career and become the 34th player in Stanford history to reach that plateau. When he reaches that milestone, he'll be one of four Stanford players all-time to post 1,000 points and 300 assists, joining former Cardinal standouts Brevin Knight, Arthur Lee and Todd Lichti ... The Cardinal have won five in a row over California, and 15 of the last 17 meetings.

  • UCLA (13-2, 3-1)... Despite playing with a sprained right ankle, sophomore G Jordan Farmar hit the winning shots at ASU - with :35 seconds left to play, his jumper gave the Bruins a 59-57 lead, and following a three-pointer by ASU's Bryson Kruger that gave the Sun Devils a 60-59 lead (:14), Farmar followed with a layup (61-60, :04) to seal the Bruin win ... Freshman F Luc Richard Mbah a Moute led the Bruins in rebounding in the desert, with a game-high nine at Arizona and a game-high eight at ASU. He's posted team-high honors in 14 of 15 games this season ... Since returning from right hip surgery (Sept. 28), sophomore F Josh Shipp has started all four league games and scored in double figures in every contest. In the desert, at ASU, he played a season-high 32 minutes, with 10 points and a season-best seven rebounds and in 31 minutes at Arizona, he had a season-high 14 points, with six rebounds in 31 minutes.

  • USC (11-4, 2-2)... Sophomore G Gabe Pruitt hit five three-pointers in each game during USC's road trip through the desert. In two games, he shot 10-of-21 (.476) from beyond the arc ... Pruitt is matching up point-for-point with his crosstown rival sophomore G Arron Afflalo. Each player has played in 44 career games and each has scored 599 career points (13.6 points per game) ... Pruitt and sophomore F Nick Young combined for 31 of USC's 32 second half points at Arizona State until junior G Lodrick Stewart won the game with a three-pointer with just over two seconds remaining in the game.

  • WASHINGTON (12-2, 1-2)... Senior G Brandon Roy is averaging 32.2 points per game in league play and is shooting 12-of-14 (.857) from three-point range in three league contests ... The Huskies lead the nation in scoring offense, averaging 90.0 points per game ... Against Washington State, sophomore G Ryan Appleby was held without a three-pointer for just the second time in 14 games this season. He leads the team with 33 treys, shooting 42.3 percent from long distance ... Freshman F Jon Brockman picked up his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points/12 rebounds vs. Cornell last week. No Husky had more than two double-doubles all last season ... The Huskies have won five of the last six meetings with USC, and have won the last three in the Sports Arena. UW is looking to snap a 19-game losing streak at Pauley Pavilion. The last Husky win over UCLA in Pauley came during the 1986-87 season.

  • WASHINGTON STATE (9-3, 2-1)... With the win over No. 8 Washington, the Cougars won for the first time on the road against a top 10 team in 53 games. They also broke a 34-game losing streak overall to top 10 teams, and snapped 11-game skid at Washington ... Washington State used its ninth different starting line-up this season ... The 71 points scored by Washington are the most by a WSU opponent in a Cougar victory under Dick Bennett ... WSU posted eight blocks against the Huskies. It was the fifth time this season Cougars have recorded seven or more blocks ... Sophomore G Kyle Weaver established career high with 19 points. He's averaging 17.0 points over his last two games against Washington ... Sophomore F Robbie Cowgill set his career high with five blocks ... Four Cougars score in double digits at Washington. It was the first time since the season-opener vs. UC Riverside that WSU had more than three players score in double figures ... Sophomore G Derrick Low suffered a broken bone in his right foot during practice on Jan. 3 and is out for a minimum of six weeks. He was WSU's leading scorer at 10.5 ppg.
