Jan. 8-15 Declared Husky Women's Volleyball Week

SEATTLE- King County Executive Rom Sims has proclaimed the week of Jan. 8-15 to be Husky Women's Volleyball Week in King County. Sims met with members of the 2005 Women's Volleyball National Championship team and coaches today at the Husky Fever Hall of Fame to offer congratulations on their first national title. Sims read the following proclamation at the event:


WHEREAS, the Pacific Northwest is fortunate to the home of talented collegiate athletes whose love of the game, competitiveness, and sportsmanship are demonstrated in their dedication to their sport; and

WHEREAS, for the first time in our region's history, the University of Washington Women's Volleyball team has successfully achieved its first NCAA national championship title; and

WHEREAS, with impressive fashion and a series of exciting victories, the University of Washington Women's Volleyball team consistently played with tenacity and resolve to bring this well-deserved title to the Pacific Northwest; and

WHEREAS, a college championship of this magnitude could not have been accomplished without the visionary leadership of coach Jim McLaughlin, assistants Leslie Tuiasosopo and Jose Gandara, and the team's talented and spirited student-athletes; and

WHEREAS, with their final victory over Nebraska's Corn Huskers, the Husky Women's Volleyball team becomes just the third Washington program to win a NCAA national title, joining women's crew and football; and

WHEREAS, Martin Luther King, Jr. County is proud to join Husky fans in celebrating the victory of a team that has won the respect and admiration of our nation and produced countless memories for collegiate sports fans that will last a lifetime;

NOW, THEREFORE, I Ron Sims, Executive of Martin Luther King, Jr. County, do hereby proclaim the week of January 8-15, 2006, as

in King County. I encourage all residents to join me in congratulating and honoring the University of Washington Women's Volleyball team for its landmark victory in the history of college sports at the University of Washington.
