Swim Set to Host Pacific; Divers Head to Indiana Invitational

Jan. 12, 2006

The No. 7 UCLA swim and dive team will split again for competition this weekend as the swimmers stay home to host Pacific at 11:00 am on Saturday, Jan. 14 and the divers head to Bloomington, IN for the Indiana Invitational Friday, Jan. 13 to Saturday, Jan. 14.

This weekend's swim meet with Pacific marks the first time in program history that the two teams have faced each other in a dual meet. It also marks the return of former Assistant Coach Greg Meehan, who is in his first year as Head Coach for the Tigers after assisting with the Bruin program from 2001 to 2004.

'The team is looking forward to putting on their UCLA suits and beginning the first of our four home meets,' said Head Coach Cyndi Gallagher. 'Our athletes have done a great job in training and have swam fast in practice, and now they have to translate that into a meet situation. Pacific has some fast swimmers, most notably 2004 NCAA qualifiers, Ja-Neil Bragg and Ziada Jardine. Coach Meehan has done a great job getting his athletes to swim fast this fall, and I expect that they will be prepared to swim even faster against us. It should be a fun meet.'

The Bruins are also looking to break the 800 Freestyle Relay record, which was set by the UCLA foursome of Kim Vandenberg, Jane Imagane, Katie Nelson and Shannon Hackett in 2005. Currently, the 800 Free Relay team is just 1.5 seconds off the NCAA 'B' cut for Nationals, and will also look to swim the NCAA qualifying time on Saturday.

So far this season, 10 Bruins have swam 'A' or 'B' qualifying times for the national meet - junior Katie Arnold (100/200 Backstroke, 50 Freestyle, 200/400 Medley Relay, 200/400 Free Relay),junior Jeana Fuccillo (400 IM and 200 Breast), junior Katie Nelson (500/1650 Freestyle, 200/400 IM), freshman Anna Poteete (50/100 Freestyle, 200/400 Free Relay, 200/400 Medley Relay), senior Eileen Seissen (100 Breast, 200/400 Medley Relay), freshman Madeleine Stanton (200 Back), sophomore Nicolette Teo (100/200 Breast), junior Amy Thurman (200/400 Free Relay, 200 Medley Relay), senior Kim Vandenberg (50/100/200 Free, 100/200{A} Butterfly, 200/400 Free Relay, 400 Medley Relay) and sophomore Chiemi Yamamoto (400 IM/200 Breast).

Events begin at 11:00 am with the 200 Medley Relay and will end with the 800 Freestyle Relay.

The Bruin divers will head to Bloomington, IN for the Indiana University Invitational with 3M Springboard at 3:00 pm and the 1M Springboard at 4:30 pm on Friday, Jan. 13. On Saturday, Jan. 14, the Platform competition will begin at 12:00 pm.

Competing on 1M and 3M are senior Paige Thompson, junior Sara Clark and freshman Marisa Samaniego. Clark and freshmen Tess Schofield and Brittany Hill will compete on the platform Saturday.

So far this season, three Bruins have qualified for the NCAA Zone Meet, which is held in March - Thompson, Clark and Samaniego.
