Jan. 14, 2006

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - After a tough loss to No. 1 Oklahoma State earlier in the day, the No. 18 Arizona State University wrestling team bounced back in the consolation bracket of the 2006 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals as they scored its second upset victory of the day, this time defeating No. 13 Northwestern, 22-17, Saturday inside the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The win moved the Sun Devils to 6-5 overall on the season and assured themselves of placing among the Top 8 in the national tournament.

No. 6 Jeremy Mendoza (Sr., Temecula, Calif.), after suffering just his second defeat of the season one bout earlier, rebounded with a 3-0 decision over No. 8 John Valez at 125 to start the Sun Devils with a 3-0 lead. But the Wildcats' Daniel Quintela scored one point for riding time to defeat Adam Hickey (So., Mayfield, Ohio), 4-3, at 133 pounds to tie the team score at three all.

Jason Robbins (Fr., Orlando, Fla.), who returned to the lineup following being out with the flu, scored a 6-4 decision victory to put ASU back on top, 6-3, before Pat Payne (So., Poway, Calif.) recorded a 12-3 major decision at 149 to push his team's advantage to 10-3. No. 7 Brian Stith (Jr., Hampton, Va.) added three more points to the tally as he recorded a 10-4 decision at 157 to give ASU a 13-3 lead midway through the dual.

NU responded, however, with wins in the next two bouts to bring the score to 13-11. At 165, No. 11 Patrick Pitsch (So., Spanaway, Wash.) lost a tough 2-1 decision in the tie-breaker session before No. 2 Jake Herbert scored a technical fall over Jamie Robbins (Jr., Mesa, Ariz.) to put the pressure on the ASU big men.

No. 8 C.B. Dollaway (Sr., Mt. Gilead, Ohio) put the Sun Devils back in the win column as he moved to 6-0 on the season when he pinned No. 10 Mike Tamillow at 2:59 for a 19-11 team lead. The win for Dollaway marks the fourth Top 15 opponent he has defeated this season.

With any type of victory at 197 sealing the team win for the Sun Devils, No. 14 Ryan Bader (Sr., Reno, Nev.) went out and dominated No. 10 Matt Delguyd for a 6-0 decision and clinch the team win for ASU. Leading 22-11, Head Coach Thom Ortiz decided to forfeit the heavyweight bout, bringing the final score to 22-17.

The victory now sets up a meeting with fourth-seeded and fifth-ranked Michigan in the teams' fourth dual of the day, starting at 7 p.m. CST. The winner of the ASU-UM dual will meet the winner of the No. 5 Iowa vs. No. 7 Iowa State dual at 1 p.m. Sunday with the winner of that dual earning fifth place. The losers of the two bouts will meet at 9 a.m. Sunday with the winner of that bout taking seventh overall.
