No. 18 Wrestling Falls to No. 1 Oklahoma State, 38-3
Jan. 14, 2006
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Coming off an impressive come-from-behind upset of No. 9 Missouri earlier in the day, the No. 18 Arizona State University wrestling team could not keep their success rolling along as No. 1 Oklahoma State, the two-time defending NCAA champions, won nine of 10 bouts to defeat the Sun Devils, 38-3, at the 2006 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Saturday inside the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The quarterfinal round loss sent ASU to a 5-5 overall record on the season and placed it in the consolation bracket where it needs to win one more dual to place in the Top 8.
Straight out of the gate, the Sun Devils fell behind as No. 6 Jeremy Mendoza (Sr., Temecula, Calif.) absorbed just his second loss of the season as No. 7 Coleman Scott secured an 8-2 decision at 125. From there, Adam Hickey (So., Mayfield, Ohio) dropped a 16-1 technical fall to No. 7 Nathan Morgan at 133 before No. 8 Daniel Frishkorn pinned Elias Johnson (Jr., Manson, Iowa) in his Sun Devil debut at 2:44.
Trailing 14-0, the Cowboys added six points with a forfeit victory at 149 before No. 7 Brian Stith (Jr., Hampton, Va.) suffered a 3-2 loss in the tie breaker round at 157 to No. 13 Kevin Ward. No. 11 Patrick Pitsch (So., Spanaway, Wash.), taking on his second Top 4 opponent of the day, could not find a way to win as he fell to No. 2 Johnny Hendricks, 14-5. No. 9 Brandon Mason then won the 174 bout with a 17-0 technical fall over Jamie Robbins (Jr., Mesa, Ariz.) to push the advantage to 32-0.
That is when C.B. Dollaway (Sr., Mt. Gilead, Ohio), the eighth-ranked wrestler at 184, halted the OSU dominance as he moved to 5-0 on the season with a 12-6 decision over Rusty Blackmon to ensure the Sun Devils would not be shutout. Dollaway's points would be the only points scored as No. 14 Ryan Bader (Sr., Reno, Nev.) suffered a 5-1 decision loss to No. 2 Jake Rosholt before No. 4 Cain Velasquez (Sr., Yuma, Ariz.) fell, 6-4, in his rematch with No. 1 Steve Mocco at heavyweight.
Despite the loss, the Sun Devils remain in the tournament and will meet the winner of the No. 13 Northwestern and No. 19 Hofstra. The ASU dual will take place at 5 p.m. CST. The winner of the dual will advance to wrestle again at 7 p.m., taking on the winner of the No. 5 Michigan vs. No. 12 Cornell/No. 24 Northern Iowa dual.
