Sun Devil Doubles Teams Strong at Day One of Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships

Las Vegas, Nev. - After the first day of competition at the Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships in Las Vegas, the Sun Devils are looking strong in doubles competition with a 3-0 record on the day. The Sun Devils met up with student-athletes eight other teams at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV, including the nation's two top-ranked teams in No. 1 Stanford and No. 2 Florida.


In first round action of the Flight One singles draw, Sabrina Capannolo (Las Vegas, Nev.) defeated Nina Suvak of Tennessee (6-4, 6-2) to advance to the second round, where she fell to third-seeded Alice Barnes of Stanford (4-6, 6-2, 6-3). Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa) was also victorious in the first round, defeating Vicki Jones of Tennessee (6-3, 1-6, 6-3). Clarke was defeated in the second round by fifth-seeded Theresa Logar, also of Stanford (7-5, 6-0). For the Sun Devils, juniors Rebecca Rankin and Kady Pooler also competed in the first round of the bye, falling 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 and 6-0, 6-3, respectively.


In the Flight Two singles draw, freshman Laila Abdala (San Diego, Calif.) earned a free pass into the second round with a default over Alex McGoodwin from UCLA and advanced into the quarterfinals round on Saturday, defeating Tennessee's Gizhella Schutte (6-4, 6-3). Junior Wendy Pilecka (Pribram, Czech Republic) defeated Jessica Leck of Stanford in the first round (6-1, 6-2) before having to default in the second round. Freshman Erica Schweyer (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) was also defeated in the first round (6-1, 6-4) by Cindy Treber of UNLV.


In doubles action, the duo of Sabrina Capannolo and Laila Abdala cruised into the second round of the Flight One draw with an 8-2 victory over Melissa Mang and Tara Iyer of Duke. The second-seeded tandem of Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke had a first-round bye and will play tomorrow. In Flight Two, Wendy Pilecka and Rebecca Rankin defeated Megan McGaovock and Miranda Gutierrez of South Carolina, 8-2. Erica Schweyer, teaming with Schutte from Tennessee, also advanced in the draw, defeating a duo from South Carolina, 8-6.


Play continues on Saturday at 11am MST with more doubles action, with the singles draw to follow. The tournament wraps up on Sunday afternoon and the Devils return home to host No. 3 Texas in their home opener on Saturday, January 21 at the WhitemanCenter in Tempe. The dual match with the Longhorns begins at noon.
