Velasquez Pins Down Upset of No. 9 Missouri, 24-21, for No. 18 ASU
Jan. 14, 2006
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The 2006 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals got underway Saturday morning for the No. 18 Arizona State University wrestling team and, after falling behind early to the eighth-seeded and ninth-ranked Tigers of Missouri in the opening round meeting, the Sun Devils made a charge late in the dual to pick-up the 24-21 upset inside the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The win, which gives ASU its first defeat of a nationally ranked team this season and moves them to 5-4 on the year, allows the Sun Devils to advance to the quarterfinals and a showdown with No. 1 Oklahoma State.
With three bouts remaining and the Sun Devils trailing, 21-10, ASU scored two major decisions to bring the score to 21-18 for the Tigers. Needing any type of victory to stay in contention for the team win, heavyweight No. 4 Cain Velasquez (Sr., Yuma, Ariz.) pinned his opponent to earn six team points and a 24-21 victory for the Sun Devils.
The dual opened with No. 6 Jeremy Mendoza (Sr., Temecula, Calif.) scoring a 10-0 major decision at 125 for the early 4-0 team lead. But, the Tigers struck back with three wins in a row, including a pair of decision victories and then a pin fall at 149, to build a 12-4 lead. The Sun Devils jumped back into the dual at 157 as No. 7 Brian Stith (Jr., Hampton, Va.) dominated the match with Michael Chandler before pinning his foe at 6:30 for six points and cutting the deficit to 12-10.
UM's stars then added points for their team as No. 4 Matt Pell secured an 8-4 decision over No. 11 Patrick Pitsch (So., Spanaway, Wash.) at 165 before No. 1 Ben Askren pinned Alex Pavlenko (Fr., Mesa, Ariz.) in 1:38 of the 174 bout to build a 21-10 lead. That is when the ASU big men stepped in.
Needing bonus points, No. 8 C.B. Dollaway (Sr., Mt. Gilead, Ohio) picked up four points with his 12-3 major decision over No. 17 Raymond Jordan at 184 before No. 14 Ryan Bader (Sr., Reno, Nev.) added another four points with his own major decision over Joey Garrity, 13-4. From there, Velasquez took to the mat and picked up the pin for the team victory.
The Sun Devils now advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament where they will take on No. 1 Oklahoma State today at 1 p.m. CST. The undefeated two-time defending national champions advanced with a 37-6 defeat of Kent State earlier in the day.
