Abdala Advances to Final Round in Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships

Las Vegas, Nev. - Freshman Laila Abdala (San Diego, Calif.) advanced into the final round of the Flight Two bracket on Saturday at the Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. As well, ASU's nationally-ranked doubles team of Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke advanced to the semifinals of the Flight One doubles bracket.
Abdala faced off against host UNLV's Linda Tempelfelde in the semifinal round. After dropping the first set 6-7, Abdala battled back to win the second set 6-2 and won the match 7-6 in the third-set tiebreaker.
In doubles competition, Pooler and Clarke advanced into the semifinals of the bracket with a 9-8 tiebreaker win over Theresa Logar and Celia Durkin of Stanford. They will play the semifinal round at 11 am MST on Sunday with the championship round following. The team of Sabrina Capannolo and Abdala fell in the quarterfinals to Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey of Stanford by a score of 8-2.
In the Flight two bracket for doubles, it will be nearly all Sun Devils in the championship on Sunday. The team of Wendy Pilecka and Rebecca Rankin advanced into the title round defeating Tennessee's team of Blakeley Griffith and Vicki Jones, 8-4. Freshman Erica Schweyer, teaming with Ghizella Schutte of Tennessee, will meet them in the final round, after defeating UNLV's Cindy Treber and Mery Constanti, 9-7.
Play concludes on Sunday at 11am MST with doubles finals, with the singles draw to follow. The Devils return home to host No. 3 Texas in their home opener on Saturday, January 21 at the Whiteman Center in Tempe. The dual match with the Longhorns begins at noon.
