No. 4 Illinois Sweeps Stanford
Jan. 15, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - Despite close matches and a strong effort by the Cardinal, fourth-ranked Illinois swept Stanford to take a 39-0 victory this afternoon at Burnham Pavilion.
The meet started at 125 pounds, where the Cardinal's lone ranked wrestler, sophomore Tanner Gardner (No. 11), faced No. 3 Kyle Ott. Gardner fought back from an early deficit to tie the bout at 3-3 in the third period, but with just six seconds left, Ott scored the deciding points on a takedown to give Illinois the first of its 10 wins.
Stanford stayed close, losing by decisions at 141 and 149 before top-ranked Alex Tirapelle notched a major decision at 157. Then, at 165 pounds, Stanford nearly turned the meet around, as senior Ray Blake trailed in the third period 3-2, but was on pace to ride ninth-ranked Mike Poeta out and secure the bonus point, before Poeta scored a reversal to clinch the 5-2 victory.
The Illini ended the match with three majors and one win by forfeit to improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Cardinal stand at 3-3.
Stanford will continue its home-stand next week, as the Cardinal opens Pac-10 action by hosting Cal State Bakersfield on Friday and Cal State Fullerton on Monday. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.
