Rodriguez and Holmes Named to U.S. U-20 National Team

Jan. 17, 2006

The USC women's soccer team will have two players suit up in red, white and blue this month as members of the U.S. Women's Under-20 National Team competing at the CONCACAF Women's U-20 Qualifying Tournament Jan. 18-27 in Veracruz, Mexico. Freshman forward Amy Rodriguez and freshman defender Meagan Holmes will make repeat appearances for Team USA, having teamed up last summer at the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship in Thailand.

Rodriguez and Holmes were selected for the 20-player roster after participating in U.S. U-20 National Team coach Tim Schulz's training camp, which ran Jan. 2-10 at the Home Depot Center and included 29 of the top young players in the nation. The 20 selected members now begin competition in Mexico in an effort to finish in the top three at the qualifying tourney and advance to the 2006 U-20 Women's World Championship to be held in Russia Aug. 17-Sept. 3, 2006.

Rodriguez also has competed as a member of the full U.S. Women's National Team last summer. As automatic starters, the freshman duo helped power USC to the NCAA Second Round in 2005. Both received Freshman All-America honors and were recently named SoccerTimes All-Americans. Rodriguez led the Women of Troy with nine goals and 25 points on the year, and Holmes helped anchor USC's tough defensive back line, which powered the Trojans to 12 shutouts in 2005.

The pair of Women of Troy will team up with some familiar faces. USC's 2005 opponents Penn State, Florida State and UCLA also have players selected to the U-20 squad that begins international competition on Jan. 19.
