PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - Malik Hairston sank two 3-point field goals in the final 12 seconds, including the game-winning basket with four-tenths of a second remaining, to lift Oregon to a 52-50 victory over Washington State on Thursday night.
Jordan Kent led Oregon (10-8, 4-2 Pac-10) with season highs of 13 points and 12 rebounds. Hairston scored 12 points, and Aaron Brooks added 10 in Oregon's third win in a row and ninth consecutive victory over Washington State.
Washington State (9-6, 2-4) was led by Josh Akognon with 18 points. Robbie Cowgill scored 12 points and had a team-high five rebounds for the Cougars. WSU was outrebounded 39-22, including 16-4 on the offensive glass.
Neither team led by more than four points. Oregon held a 29-27 lead at the half.
Oregon led 46-44 with 2:55 left before WSU scored six unanswered points. Cowgill hit a hook shot off an Akognon feed with 2:25 left. Cowgill sank a 10-foot jumper with 38.3 seconds to go, then Akognon sank two free throws with 25 seconds left.
Washington State's Ivory Clark missed the front end of a one-and-one free-throw situation with 10.7 seconds left. The Cougars made just 8 of 14 free throws in the game, and Oregon went 7-for-14.
Both teams shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, but dropped below 40 percent in the second half. Oregon shot 42 percent for the game, compared to 44 percent for WSU.
WSU's points and rebounds were season lows. The Ducks tied their season low for points. The total of 102 points was the lowest in the Oregon-Washington State series since the Cougars beat Oregon 48-45 (93 total points) on Feb. 17, 1983.
The loss was Washington State's first in seven games at Friel Court this season. Oregon had been 0-6 away from home.
