Baseball Opens 2006 Season With Annual Alumni Game Saturday

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th ranked Arizona State University baseball team will kick off the 2006 season with the Annual Alumni game at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. The Devils will open the 2006 regular season next weekend with a three-game series against Cal State Northridge, Jan. 27-30.

The Alumni Game will feature a great lineup of former Sun Devils in attendance, including members of the 1981 National Championship team, who will be honored in a pre-game ceremony celebrating the 25th anniversary of their national title. Highlighting the Alumni roster are current minor leaguers Jeremy West (Boston Red Sox), Steve Garrabrants (Arizona Diamondbacks), Brooks Conrad (Houston Astros) and Beau Vaughn (Boston Red Sox). Former Major Leaguers Ken Phelps, Blas Minor and Mike Benjamin are also scheduled to suit up for the Alumni. Another familiar name to Sun Devil fans scheduled to play is Kevin Romine, father of current Sun Devil Andrew Romine. Kevin was a member of the 1981 championship team.

Recent and past alumni tentatively scheduled to appear but not play in the game include 1984 American League Rookie of the Year Alvin Davis (1979-82), two-time Gold Glove winner and 1998 All-Star Fernando Vina (1990), current Colorado Rockies pitcher Mike Esposito (2000-02), 2005 CWS hero and Detroit Tigers draft pick Jeff Larish (2002-05), three-time All-Pac-10 First Team member Dustin Pedroia (2002-04) and last years first round pick of the Oakland A's, Travis Buck (2003-05). Numerous other Sun Devil alumni will also be in attendance this weekend for the Brock Ballpark dedication, being held Friday night.

The tribute to the 1981 team will begin at 12:40 p.m. on Winkles Field, along with a ceremony honoring former Head Coach Dr. Jim Brock.First pitch for the game will be thrown at 1:20 p.m. Admission to the Annual Alumni game is free at Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
