Marvell Wynne Picked No. 1 In 2006 MLS SuperDraft

Jan. 20, 2006

Sophomore defender Marvell Wynne became the third UCLA player drafted No. 1 overall in the MLS SuperDraft. The New York/New Jersey MetroStars traded up for the chance to draft Wynne, swapping a No. 5 pick and a player to be named later with local team Chivas USA. Junior midfielder/defender Patrick Ianni was also selected in the first round, No. 8 overall by Houston.

Wynne was a consensus first-team All-American in 2005 and a semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. He turned heads at the World Youth Championships last summer and spurned professional offers to return to UCLA for another year. In 2005, Wynne led the Bruin defense to a No. 1 national ranking in shutout percentage (0.70) and to a team goals against average of 0.67, which ranked 12th in the nation. He scored one goal and had three assists on the year.

Ianni earned second-team NSCAA/adidas All-America honors last season and was also a M.A.C. Hermann Trophy semifinalist. Like Wynne, Ianni also spurned professional offers after a strong showing at the 2005 World Youth Championships and returned to UCLA to help the Bruins win a fourth-straight Pac-10 title. He scored two goals with two assists and helped the Bruins shut out 14 of 20 opponents on the year. In 2004, Ianni was selected the Pac-10 Co-Player of the Year. Ianni joins an organization that his older brother Tayt played for from 1996-97 (Houston relocated from San Jose last month).

Wynne joins Steve Shak (2000, MetroStars) and Tahj Jakins (1997, Colorado) as No. 1 picks from UCLA, the most of any college in the nation. UCLA has produced more MLS players than any other university. Last year, a league-high 20 former Bruins were on opening day rosters, and a total of 42 players have been on MLS teams since the league's formation in 1996.
