Jan. 20, 2006

As the USC track and field teams begin to get ready for the upcoming season which starts on Feb. 25, several Trojans will participate this Saturday (Jan. 21) at the inaugural Modrall Sperling Lobo Invitational indoor track and field meet in Albuquerque, N.M.

Senior All-American Virginia Powell (competing in the 60m, 60m HH) highlights a group of 15 USC track and field members competing in the meet. She won NCAA titles last season in both the indoor 60m hurdles and the outdoor 100m hurdles, as well as establishing the school record and tying the fastest time ever in the event by a collegiate runner with a time of 12.61 at the U.S. Championships in June.

Sophomore high jumper Manjula Wijesekara (high jump), coming off a stellar freshman and a summer campaign which saw him win the gold medal at the Asian Athletic Championship with the third highest height in school history (7-5 ¼), is the only USC male athlete entered.

The Trojans will be entering predominantly female athletes in a handful of indoor meets to get ready for the outdoor season. Also competing this Saturday in New Mexico are: Alexis Weatherspoon (60m, 200m, 4x400m), Jessica Onyepunuka (60m, 200m, 4x400m), Candice Davis (60m, 60m HH), Carol Rodriguez (60m, 200m, 4x400m), Whitney Graham (60m, 200m), Talia Stewart (60m, 60m HH, 4x400m), Treani Swain (400m, 4x400m), Tunisia Johnson (800m, 4x400m), Bryson Stately (pole vault), Michelle Sanford (long jump, triple jump), Brittany Daniels (long jump, triple jump), Katarzyna Klisowska (long jump, triple jump) and Karen Freberg (shot, hammer).
